Last week, Ambassador Christopher Brathwaite represented Barbados at the 22nd ParlAmericas Plenary Assembly & 10th Gathering of the Open Parliament Network at the Parliament of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario.

Ambassador Brathwaite was one of ten dynamic young leaders from across the Americas and the Caribbean invited to serve on a youth delegation to Ottawa. This delegation was given the opportunity to engage directly with regional parliamentarians on youth issues while participating in a masterclass of hemispheric diplomacy.

On Day 3, the Youth Delegation presented to the Assembly on various socioeconomic issues affecting young people. Ambassador Brathwaite spoke on “Advancing Youth Inclusion by Addressing Systemic Inequalities in Emerging Economies”. Here is a snippet of his commentary.

Ambassador Brathwaite remains deeply thankful to ParlAmericas and the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada for the invitation to actively engage in hemispheric parliamentary dialogue. And to the young people of Barbados and the Caribbean, whom he is always honoured to serve.

Last week, the CARICOM Youth Ambassadors attended the United Nations ECOSOC Youth Forum in New York, as Advisers on Barbados’ Delegation, led by Senator the Honourable Shane Archer, Minister of Youth Affairs and Culture.

The forum provided an opportunity for Barbados’ young leaders to contribute to global youth policymaking, network with their regional and global counterparts, and shape the international position on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals with respect to the youth perspective.

The Ambassadors remain committed to representing the youth in every room they can. And they remain grateful for the trust placed in them to do so. 🇧🇧🤝🏾🇺🇳

Last week, our CARICOM Youth Ambassadors attended the United Nations ECOSOC Youth Forum in New York, as Advisors on Barbados’ Delegation, led by Senator the Honourable Shane Archer, Minister of Youth Affairs and Culture.

One of the most critical events at this forum, is the Caribbean Caucus’ Strategic Side Meeting. This gathering allows youth leaders from across the Caribbean to consolidate their positions and leverage their collective strengths for the region, with regard to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Speaking on behalf of the Minister in this snippet is Ambassador Christopher Brathwaite, who identified Barbados’ focus on SDG 17 - Partnership for all the Goals - as the key to securing a sustainable, youth-centric future for the region and beyond. CARICOM, if we allow it, can be the blueprint for global partnerships in socioeconomic development pursuits. But, that will only come once we truly reinforce regional ties and “Rally ‘Round de West Indies”!

Bringing CARICOM to you! ✨

Ten days ago, the CARICOM Youth Ambassadors hosted a Training Session for Leaders of The Girl Guides Association of Barbados and The Barbados Boy Scouts Association for the recently launched CARICOM Badge! 📝

The CARICOM Badge is an initiative spearheaded by Immediate Past Youth CARICOM Ambassador Ashley Lashley, which challenges Girl Guides and Boy Scouts to delve deeper into the history, culture, and significance of the region. Leaders who attended are now well-equipped to implement this badge into their group curriculum!

We are so thankful to The Girl Guides Association of Barbados and The Barbados Boy Scout Association for their continued support of this initiative. We remain equally excited to welcome the first Class of CARICOM Badge Awardees, this time next year!

The Leaders of the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts are now equipped to implement this new badge into their respective programs! We cannot wait to see how this transforms the understanding of CARICOM as a regional entity among our young people! 🧠

“Stronger Together” 🌎

Barbados’ CARICOM Youth Ambassadors Janae Herbert and Christopher Brathwaite paid a courtesy call to Barbados’ Ambassador to CARICOM, His Excellency Ambassador David Comissiong at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.

They were accompanied by Ambassadors Alternate Jennifer Burrows and Kalan Alleyne, as well as the Youth Projects Coordinator at the Ministry of Youth Sports and Community Empowerment, Mr. David Denny.

The meeting entailed an overview of CARICOM’s current affairs with emphasis placed on Barbados’ ongoing relationships with other CARICOM members, particularly highlighting the “Full Free Movement” agreement implemented earlier this year on October 1st by Barbados, Belize, Dominica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Additionally, the Youth Ambassadors shared and received feedback on plans arising from internal caucuses and discussed a way forward; underscoring the need for regional collaboration when seeking to accomplish both regional and national objectives.

Get to know the people behind the Office of CARICOM Youth Ambassador! 🇧🇧

Ambassador Janae Herbert, at 18 years old, truly embodies the spirit and essence of youth advocacy. Emboldened by the principles of action, she has demonstrated immense dedication to causes she believes in — spanning from education and empowerment, to mental and sexual healthcare.

CARICOM regionalism quite literally runs through her veins, as a citizen of both Barbados and St. Kitts & Nevis! This duality has shaped her commitment to regionalism, as she understands better than most, the power in unity for the Caribbean.

Underscoring the mammoth obligation before her, she envisions helping to bring about a better Barbados and Caribbean by platforming the causes dear to her from the Office of CARICOM Youth Ambassador.

Get to know the people behind the Office of CARICOM Youth Ambassador! 🇧🇧

Ambassador Christopher Brathwaite deeply understands the value of inclusion. For us to design a Barbados and West Indies region which works for all of us, youth must have a contributory seat at the decision-making table — even if they must bring one themselves.

As a student of global affairs and policymaking, he believes the way forward is rooted in developing contemporary policies and strengthening collaborative diplomacy. His time at the University of the West Indies, Mona and his work at the Organization of American States were transformative experiences in developing his vision for regional integration and unity, as he experienced the fruits of CARICOM first-hand. He knows that we are a people connected, not separated, by water.

Resolute in his responsibility to advocate for young people, he is humbled and privileged to continue his long record of service to community, to nation, to region, and to young people from the Office of CARICOM Youth Ambassador.
