This Sunday on Pause for Parenting, we welcome Jay Belmar, Mass Media Campaign Officer for an important conversation about the Foundation’s new campaign, “Enough. If it harms our children’s health, it must be regulated.”

Children are exposed every day to advertising that influences their food choices, preferences, and eating habits. Jay discusses how food and beverage marketing impacts children’s health, why schools should be safe spaces that promote healthy choices, and what parents, educators, and communities can do to support healthier environments for our children.

Join us as we explore the role of marketing in shaping children’s behaviors and learn how we can work together to draw the line on unhealthy food and drink promotion in schools.

June is Men’s Mental Health Month—a time to recognize that mental wellness matters at every stage of life.

From boyhood to older adulthood, Black men often face unique challenges while being expected to remain strong, silent, and resilient. This month, let’s challenge that narrative. Strength is not found in suffering alone—it is found in speaking up, seeking support, and caring for your emotional well-being.

Whether you’re a son, brother, father, uncle, mentor, or friend, your mental health matters. Let us create spaces where Black men and boys feel seen, heard, valued, and supported.

Strong men feel. Strong men talk. Strong men heal.

🧃 MYTH VS FACT – WEEK 2

MYTH: If it’s sold for children, it must be healthy.

FACT: Many foods and drinks marketed to children are ultra-processed and can be high in sugar, salt, and additives while providing little nutritional value.

Bright packaging, cartoon characters, and fun marketing can make products appealing, but they don’t tell the full story. The best way to know what’s really in a product is to check the nutrition label and ingredient list before adding it to your shopping cart.

As parents and caregivers, understanding food marketing tactics helps us make informed choices that support our children’s health and well-being.

PART 5 OF 5 - One of the most engaging segments of the Healthy Children, Healthy Barbados Workshop was the panel discussion, expertly moderated by Racquel Yarde.

Racquel guided a dynamic and interactive conversation featuring Brian Payne, Kibara Foster, and Pierre Cook, Jr., creating space for participants to ask questions, share experiences, and explore practical solutions related to children’s nutrition, food marketing, and healthy lifestyles.

The discussion highlighted the challenges families face in today’s food environment while also providing valuable strategies for making healthier choices and advocating for children’s well-being. Participants appreciated the opportunity to engage directly with the presenters and deepen their understanding of the issues discussed throughout the workshop.

Thank you, Racquel, for facilitating a thoughtful and informative discussion that encouraged meaningful dialogue and community engagement.

PART 4 OF 5 - Building on the discussion of food marketing and media influence, Youth Advocate and Attorney-at-Law Pierre Cook, Jr. continued the conversation by examining how advertising tactics shape children’s preferences, purchasing requests, and eating habits.

Pierre encouraged participants to think critically about the ways children are exposed to marketing across television, social media, sponsorships, and other digital platforms. He highlighted the importance of protecting children from persuasive marketing practices and empowering parents to help young people recognize when they are being targeted by advertisers.

His presentation sparked thoughtful discussion about the responsibility shared by families, communities, industry, and policymakers in creating healthier environments for children.

Thank you, Pierre, for your insightful contribution to the Healthy Children, Healthy Barbados Workshop and for helping to raise awareness about the impact of food marketing on our nation’s youth.

PART 3 OF 4 - How do advertisers capture children’s attention and influence their food choices?

At our Healthy Children, Healthy Barbados Workshop, Youth Advocate Kibara Foster delivered a compelling presentation on the advertising tactics used to market foods and beverages to children. Participants learned how colorful packaging, cartoon characters, celebrity endorsements, social media content, giveaways, and emotional messaging are strategically designed to make products more appealing to young audiences.

Kibara challenged parents and caregivers to look beyond the marketing and think critically about the messages children receive every day. Her presentation highlighted the importance of media literacy and the role families can play in helping children become more informed consumers.

Thank you, Kibara, for shedding light on an important issue and empowering families to recognize and respond to these marketing influences.

One of the highlights of our Healthy Children, Healthy Barbados Workshop was an engaging presentation by Brian Payne, Deputy Nutrition Officer at the National Nutrition Centre, Ministry of Health & Wellness.

Participants learned how to identify hidden sugars and sodium in everyday foods by understanding nutrition labels and ingredient lists, empowering them to make more informed choices for themselves and their families. Brian also shared practical information on healthy weight management, emphasizing sustainable lifestyle changes rather than quick fixes.

The session sparked thoughtful discussion and provided valuable tools to help families navigate today’s food environment with greater confidence.

Thank you, Brian, for helping us build healthier communities through education and awareness.
