MESSAGE FROM DR.CUMMINS
International Men’s Day: A Synopsis
International Men’s Day (IMD), celebrated annually on November 19th, is a global occasion that highlights the contributions of men to society, their well-being, and the importance of gender equality. It was first established in 1999 by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a lecturer from Trinidad and Tobago, who sought to promote positive male role models and raise awareness of the challenges men face. Teelucksingh chose November 19th to honor his father’s birthday and also to mark a day when a local soccer team united his community.
The day is not officially recognized by the United Nations, but it is observed in over 80 countries worldwide, supported by individuals, organizations, and institutions. Its aims include promoting men’s mental and physical health, fostering better gender relations, and celebrating the achievements of men in diverse fields. The vision is to create a safer, better world where men and women can thrive together, with the mission of emphasizing the importance of being positive role models and addressing issues such as su***de prevention, fatherhood, and toxic stereotypes.
The first IMD celebrations in 1999 included public seminars, forums, panel discussions, and social gatherings to highlight men’s health, gender equality, and positive contributions to society. The theme each year shifts to reflect pertinent issues, encouraging ongoing dialogue and progress.
Message to Men: Past, Present, and Future
Today, we stand united to honor the men who have shaped the past, drive the present, and inspire hope for the future. International Men’s Day is not just a celebration—it is a call to recognize the value of men in our families, communities, and nations.
Reflecting on the Past
The journey of men through history has been marked by resilience and strength. From the builders of civilizations to the protectors of families, men have faced wars, societal expectations, and immense pressure to lead and provide. Despite these challenges, they have persevered, leaving legacies of courage and innovation.
The Present Reality
Today’s men confront a complex world where traditional roles are evolving. Many face silent battles with mental health, societal stereotypes, and the struggle to balance work and family. Yet, amidst these struggles, men continue to contribute selflessly as fathers, brothers, husbands, mentors, and leaders. It is essential to acknowledge these efforts and support men in breaking free from outdated norms that limit emotional expression and vulnerability.
Looking to the Future
The future is bright with possibilities. We envision a world where men are celebrated for their individuality and contributions, where they feel empowered to embrace their emotions, seek help when needed, and lead with compassion. As societal norms evolve, men will continue to redefine strength—not as stoicism, but as the courage to be authentic and kind. Together, we can build a world where the achievements of men and women harmonize to create a better, more inclusive tomorrow.
Let us honor the men of yesterday for their sacrifices, support the men of today in their endeavors, and inspire the men of tomorrow to live with purpose and hope. To all men, know this: your value is immense, your struggles are seen, and your future is filled with potential. Let us move forward together with strength, wisdom, and unity.
Happy International Men’s Day!
Please share with all the men you care for.
