33 animals treated. Countless conversations.

On September 26, we held another veterinary/animal care clinic in Massiah Street, St. John, an area where we've been working for several years.

We saw 32 dogs and one cat, providing veterinary examinations, vaccinations, deworming and flea and tick treatments. Two dogs were also surrendered into our care, and we made arrangements for further veterinary attention and spaying and neutering.

But some of the most encouraging things that happened that day weren't recorded on the clinic log.

People we'd met on previous visits came back with their animals. Others we'd been talking to over time returned to continue those conversations. And there were new faces, some encouraged to attend by people we'd already worked with.

That's huge.

Massiah Street has some longstanding animal welfare problems. That hasn't disappeared, and there is work still to do. But by continuing to show up and offer practical help and advice, we're building trust.

At this latest clinic, we could see the value of that approach.

Our work in Massiah Street received an important boost through a 2024 World Animal Day grant from Naturewatch Foundation, which helped us expand our efforts in the area. We're so grateful for that support and pleased to be continuing the work.

A big thank you to Dr. Laura Williams of WellVet for volunteering her veterinary services, Spartan Animal Kingdom for donating NexGard and deworming medication, Central Vet for donating vaccines, and Messiah House Wesleyan Holiness Church for hosting us.

And to our volunteers, and especially Alicia and Jenn. You are rock stars! ❤️

Thank you to everyone who brought their animals, came back to see us, or encouraged someone else to attend.

We know we're a little late sharing this one. Between the rescues, emergencies and the sheer number of animals in our care, things have been especially intense lately. There's an awful lot happening at Ocean Acres that never makes it onto our social media at the moment.

There's a lot more to do. And we'll keep doing it. ❤️

Why should something happening in UK law matter to us here in Barbados?
Because we tend to see animal cruelty as an animal welfare issue. Of course it is. But it can also tell us something about what is happening to the people in that household, and sometimes within the wider community around it.
That makes this a very important conversation for Barbados.
Our partners at Naturewatch Foundation have worked for years to bring greater attention to the connection between animal cruelty, domestic abuse, and safeguarding through their Protect Animals. Protect People. campaign.
This week brought another important step forward. In England and Wales, a change in sentencing law means that when an offence involves domestic abuse, that connection must now be recognised in court.
Naturewatch is also working with the family of Holly Bramley on Holly’s Law. Holly was murdered by her partner in 2023 after experiencing violence and coercive control; her animals had also been abused during the relationship. Holly’s Law is pushing for a history of animal abuse to be recognised when assessing domestic abuse risk through the UK’s Clare’s Law system.
For Barbados, the important point is not the detail of UK law. It is recognising the connection.
An animal welfare organisation may see one part of what is happening. A vet may see another. Police, the courts, social services and domestic violence organisations may each have another piece. If we look at those things separately, we can miss the bigger picture.
And in small communities, where lives, families and neighbourhoods overlap so closely, understanding those connections matters.
That is one reason our relationship with Naturewatch matters to Ocean Acres. They run World Animal Day, but their work goes far beyond one day. It gives us access to research, experience and thinking from elsewhere, and the opportunity to bring important conversations home to Barbados.
If Holly’s Law and Clare’s Law are new to you, look them up and read about them.
Because protecting animals and protecting people are part of the same conversation.
