After 2.5 years CIEL returned to the Middle East in January with a newly developed Jordan program in partnership with the University of Wyoming.

With 17 students we traveled to Amman, Ajlun, Aqaba, Wadi Rum, Petra, and Madaba and focused on four intersecting pillars: Israel–Palestine, Jordan’s role in navigating regional migration, displacement and political strife, environmental pressures (especially water), and regional security.

Jordan offered a stable base for rigorous learning while staying close to the region’s hardest questions. The program paired high-level institutional briefings with grounded community encounters: meetings with the Palestinian and U.S. embassies and Jordanian parliamentarians, and conversations with civil society actors including EcoPeace, the Jordan River Foundation, and the Royal Institute for Interfaith Studies, alongside women’s cooperatives and local communities outside the capital. We also brought in additional Israeli and Palestinian voices virtually to keep multiple perspectives in the room.

In reflections, students described less “certainty” and more precision: learning what diplomacy sounds like during conflict, listening across competing narratives, and recognizing how simplified framings fall apart when you sit with people’s lived experience. This trip was a reminder of how urgently we need to cut through algorithm-driven narratives right now and return to careful, compassionate study of difficult realities, shaped by listening first.

First CIEL Northern Ireland trip of 2026 - completed!

For the last two weekend, students from Colgate University have traveling to Northern Ireland for an immersive learning experience focused on conflict, peacebuilding, and post-conflict governance. Through meetings with former combatants, policymakers, community leaders, and victims’ groups, students critically engaged with the legacies of the Troubles and the ongoing challenges of reconciliation, memory, and governance. These experiences offered powerful insights into peacebuilding in deeply divided societies.

CIEL has a full year of trips ahead! Interested in traveling with us? Check out our website for more opportunities to travel to Northern Ireland, the Middle East, the Balkans, Germany and France, and more!

CIEL is inviting mental health professional looking for a powerful, global lens on trauma, healing, and community resilience.

This upcoming June 2026, join CIEL in Northern Ireland for a one-of-a-kind Continuing Education program designed exclusively for psychologists, counselors, social workers, and mental health leaders. Over five immersive days (June 7–13, 2026), you will explore what it means to support wellness in a society emerging from decades of division—directly from the people who lived it.

Through conversations with trauma survivors, former political prisoners, mental health clinicians, peacebuilders, and community organizers, you will gain first-hand insight into:
• The mental health impacts of conflict and political violence
• Transgenerational trauma and community healing
• How divided societies rebuild trust and institutions
• The lasting effects—and ongoing challenges—of the Good Friday Agreement

The program includes panel discussions, site visits, facilitated reflections, and exclusive meetings with local experts whose lived experiences bring theory into sharp focus. Participants earn 30 APA-approved CE credits while engaging in profound, field-based learning.

This Giving Tuesday, we’re launching the CIEL Scholarship Fund 2026: and we’re asking for your support.

In 2025, over 100 students joined CIEL programs in Vietnam and Cambodia, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo, and more. They studied conflict recovery, civic trust, and divided societies firsthand.

But access isn’t automatic.

Without your support, over 30 of these students would have been unable to afford to travel with us this year.

Your donation makes these programs accessible.

📍 Goal: $100,000 till the end of next year
📍 100% goes to scholarships for 2026
📍 Every donation helps one more student participate

Spaces for public discourse are shrinking. 65% of U.S. college students report self-censoring in class. Nearly one in three believe violence can sometimes be justified to stop debate.

CIEL brings students to places that have lived through deep division—where they study how fractured societies rebuild and what it takes to sustain dialogue across difference. Northern Ireland. The Middle East. Vietnam & Cambodia. The Balkans. France & Germany. Border regions.

This Giving Tuesday, fund a scholarship. Help make it possible for one more student to develop the clarity, conflict literacy, and civic tools this moment demands. Link in bio

Bosnia offered some of the most complex and necessary conversations of the Balkans Community Trip. At the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial, we met members of the Mothers of Srebrenica and local researchers working to document evidence, preserve memory, and pursue justice. Their perspectives revealed not only the depth of loss and generational trauma but also the persistence required to prevent denial and revisionism.

In Sarajevo, we examined how trauma continues to shape identity, politics, and everyday life decades after the war. Scholars, activists, and mental health professionals spoke about intergenerational transmission of trauma, the fragility of peace, and the challenges of sustaining dialogue in a society still negotiating its past.

In Mostar, we explored how a divided city continues to live with the physical and psychological traces of war—where daily coexistence itself remains a form of resilience.

“My identity was determined by the guy on the other end of the Kalashnikov.” — Dr. Hikmet Karčić, University of Sarajevo

“Peace is fragile, fragmented, and unevenly experienced.” — Zerina Mandžo Čolić, UN Project Coordinator, Sarajevo

“The younger generation has a lot of transferred trauma, but no direct experience of it.” — Psychologist, Sarajevo

“I am not a victim. [flexing her biceps]“— Kada Hotić, Mothers of Srebrenica

“This is the place where Europe, the US, and the world failed the exam.” — Munira Subašić, Mothers of Srebrenica

Bosnia reminded us that the work of peace is inseparable from the work of confronting trauma—through documentation, dialogue, and the refusal to forget.

2024 has been marked by tragedy and upheaval globally and political polarization, economic struggles, and divisive immigration debates at home.

It has underscored a pressing need for understanding, compassion, and leadership grounded in empathy, curiosity and resilience.

CIEL believes that now, more than ever, we need to expose young leaders to post-conflict areas around the world where we can learn how to heal our communities from division, polarization and despair. At the same time, we will continue to offer opportunities to engage critically and empatheticly with ongoing challenges by learning directly from the affected places and people.
