Green Film Balkans 🌱🎬

From 28–30 September 2026, film and audiovisual professionals from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro came together online to explore how we can make film production more sustainable and how film itself can help us imagine a different future.
For Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as Montenegro this conversation is an important
step towards building knowledge, practical tools and production practices that respond to our local realities while connecting our film industry with the evolving standards of European audiovisual production.

🎬 DAY 1 - CLIMATE & AWARENESS
Understanding the climate crisis, climate literacy and the environmental impact of
audiovisual production.
🎬 DAY 2 - SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION
Practical solutions for energy, transport, catering, materials and waste with real
production experiences and examples.
🎬 DAY 3 - GREEN NARRATIVES & THE FUTURE
Exploring how film can move beyond dystopian visions and create stories of action, hope, justice and possible futures.

The workshops showed that sustainability is not necessarily about doing more but about
planning better, using resources more responsibly and finding solutions that work in our own production environments.

📗NEXT STEP: the publication of practical guidelines for sustainable film production
in the Balkans, adapted to our regional context and production realities.

Green Film Balkans 28.9.- 30.9. - Day 3 Recap

Our final day focused on the power of storytelling to imagine and shape a more sustainable future.

With Eva Svenstedt Ward, we explored climate narratives beyond fear and dystopia — stories that inspire agency, hope, justice and alternative futures.

We also looked at practical ways to make film production more sustainable: better planning, resource efficiency, sustainable catering, crew engagement and small changes that can make a real difference.

The day concluded with an important next step for the region: developing practical sustainable-filmmaking guidelines for the Balkans, adapted to our local realities.

The stories we tell can help shape the future we want to see. 🌱🎬

Thank you to Dörte Schneider Garcia and Eva Svenstedt Ward for bringing their knowledge, experience and vision to Green Film Balkans. 💚

Green Film Balkans 28.9. - 30.9. - Day 2 Recap

From theory to practice: Day 2 explored how sustainability can become an integral part of film production — from energy, transport, catering and materials to waste management and certification.

Through the case study of 18 Holes to Paradise, producer Andreia Nunes shared practical solutions, challenges and lessons from Portugal’s first green-certified film production. The film achieved 31/50 certification points and measured a carbon footprint of 93 tonnes of CO₂.

The day also brought a creative perspective through writer and director Fernanda Polacow, who explored how environmental and social concerns can shape stories, characters and the worlds we create on screen — from climate change and water scarcity to land, inequality and different visions of the future.

Sustainability is not only about how we make films — it is also about what kind of world we choose to put on screen. 🌱🎬

Special thanks to Dörte Schneider Garcia and Eva Svenstedt Ward for bringing these inspiring perspectives together.

Green Film Balkans 28.9. - 30.9. - Day 1 Recap

🌍 Climate change is happening now.

Extreme heat, floods, wildfires, droughts and changing seasons are already affecting our communities.

🎬 The film industry is part of this transformation. Sustainability is not only about recycling — it is about rethinking how we produce, consume and create.

🚨 Seven of the nine planetary boundaries have already been crossed.

💡 But there is also reason for action and hope: science, technology, creativity and collective action can make a difference.

🎥 As filmmakers, we have two opportunities: to reduce the footprint of our productions and to use storytelling to make the climate crisis relatable — and inspire action.

Films That Leave an Impact. Not a Footprint.
