🌍 2026 – International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists

Grasslands and extensive grazing are vital for biodiversity, food production, and climate resilience. This year, our partners from BIOM highlighting transhumance – a nearly forgotten tradition of seasonal livestock movement, recognized as cultural heritage in Croatia in 2025.

🎙 Through conversations with ethnologist Grga Frangeš and conservation expert Ivan Budinski, they explore its history, impact on biodiversity, and future potential.

This practice still survives in parts of Istria, Velebit, Lička Plješivica, and Dinara—mostly thanks to dedicated individuals and small groups.

💡 With growing interest in local, traditional, and ethical food, transhumance may yet have a future.

📍The annual meeting of the BIO net network was held this year in Split with the support of CCFD, within a project implemented by the Center for Environment. Important local support for the organization of this year’s meeting was provided by the host organization “Sunce” from Split.

🔗This year, the meeting brought together seven partner organizations (CZZS, PPNEA, INCA, SUNCE, BIOM, MIS, CZIP) from five countries in the region (Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Montenegro, and Serbia). In addition to network members, on the final day of the meeting we were joined by a representative of the international organization Bankwatch (BW), Pippa Gallop, with whom we shared experiences and discussed possible forms of future cooperation, including the potential admission of BW as an associate member of BIOnet.

🗓️ ⏱️ 26 years ago, on July 8th, a group of enthusiastic students from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Banja Luka founded the citizens’ association "Young Researchers".

🌿🦇🦀... When the young researchers were no longer so young, and when research grew into a fight for nature and people, they decided to change the name to Center for Environment, which still exists today.

To celebrate 25 years of fight for nature and people, our partners from Center for Emvironment filmed a short funny video.
