From carving lino blocks ✂️ to printing beautiful designs onto textiles 🧵✨, the women embraced their creativity and produced some stunning work. 🌸👏

🌿✨ York Yorgas | Walk-Make-Wear Workshop Series ✨🌿

Our York Yorgas recently gathered for Session 3 of the inspiring Walk-Make-Wear Jewellery Crafting Workshop Series, facilitated by the talented Sultana Shamshi 💎🧵🎨.

Held at the historic York Post Office Building, the workshop continues to provide local Aboriginal women with opportunities to develop new skills, explore their creativity, and strengthen connections with one another through culture, art, and shared learning. 🖤💛❤️

During this session, participants further developed their jewellery-making techniques, creating beautiful handcrafted pieces while building their confidence and knowledge as emerging makers and artisans. ✨📿🌿

The workshop series is designed to support women to upskill and develop high-quality handcrafted products that can be showcased and sold at the upcoming Ballardong First Event to be held in York this January. 🎪🛍️🎨

More than just a workshop, the sessions provide a welcoming space for women to come together, share stories, support one another, and celebrate culture through creativity and enterprise. 🤝💕🌻

A huge thank you to Sultana Shamshi for sharing her skills, knowledge, and passion with our York Yorgas, and to all the women who continue to show up, learn, create, and inspire one another each week. 🌟

🎨 Get Creative • Learn New Skills • Connect with Ballardong Moorditj Community Group 🎨

Join us in OCTOBER for a special Hands Workshop Series facilitated by renowned textile artist Peta Smith, where participants will learn the art of LINO PRINTING on textiles.

This hands-on workshop will guide women through the process of designing, carving, and printing their own lino blocks onto a variety of textile materials. Participants will have the opportunity to explore creative expression while developing practical printing skills that can be applied to future art, craft, and small business ventures.

Join us this week for another creative and inspiring session as part of the From Our Hands Program.

From Our Hands is a community-led creative development project coordinated through the Ballardong Moorditj Aboriginal Arts Hub (BMAH) in York. The program provides a culturally safe, Aboriginal-led space where Ballardong women can gather to:

🌿 Develop creative and technical skills
🌿 Strengthen cultural practice and connection
🌿 Build pathways to ethical economic participation through arts and crafts
🌿 Prepare for commercial, exhibition and commissioned opportunities

Through the WALK-MAKE-WEAR Workshop Series, participants are creating unique handcrafted jewellery and wearable art pieces that will form part of the upcoming Ballardong First Event. Selected works will also be available for purchase at the BBQ Picnic Event Night, providing an opportunity for the community to support local Ballardong artists and celebrate their creativity.

Whether you're continuing a project or joining us to learn new skills, we look forward to seeing you there for a morning of creativity, culture, conversation, and connection.

🌿✨ York Yorgas Women's Group | WALK-MAKE-WEAR Workshop Series Session 3 ✨🌿

Last week's York Yorgas session was filled with creativity, connection, and culture as the women designed and created beautiful handcrafted jewellery pieces through the WALK-MAKE-WEAR Workshop Series, proudly delivered as part of the From Our Hands Program.

From Our Hands is a community-led creative development project coordinated through the Ballardong Moorditj Aboriginal Arts Hub (BMAH) in York. The program provides a culturally safe, Aboriginal-led space where Ballardong women can come together to:

🌿 Develop creative and technical skills
🌿 Strengthen cultural practice and connection
🌿 Build pathways to ethical economic participation through arts and crafts
🌿 Prepare for commercial, exhibition, and commissioned opportunities

The jewellery pieces currently being created by the York Yorgas will contribute towards the upcoming Ballardong First Event, with many of the handmade items available for purchase during the BBQ Picnic Event Night. This provides an exciting opportunity for participants to showcase their talents, share their creativity with the wider community, and gain experience in presenting and selling their work.

Since commencing in May, the program has provided regular opportunities for women to learn new skills, build confidence, connect with culture, and support one another through creative practice.

A big thank you to all the women who participated. We are excited to see the collection continue to grow as we work towards Ballardong First.

Join the York Yorgas Group for 4 Wednesdays in September for a creative series of hands-on workshops exploring denim textiles in a supportive, welcoming, and inspiring space.

Facilitated by Sultana Shamish, an artist and jeweller whose creative practice explores storytelling, culture, and personal expression through handcrafted wearable art. Drawing on natural, found, and repurposed materials, Sultana encourages participants to create unique pieces that reflect their own identity and connection to place.
