Join the York Yorgas Group for 4 Wednesdays in September for a creative series of hands-on workshops exploring denim textiles in a supportive, welcoming, and inspiring space.

Facilitated by Sultana Shamish, an artist and jeweller whose creative practice explores storytelling, culture, and personal expression through handcrafted wearable art. Drawing on natural, found, and repurposed materials, Sultana encourages participants to create unique pieces that reflect their own identity and connection to place.

🌼 York Yorgas Kambarang Program - From Our Hands 🌼

The York Yorgas Women's Group welcomes the season of Kambarang, a time of renewal, growth, and abundance on Noongar Boodja. As the weather warms and wildflowers begin to bloom, Kambarang reminds us of the importance of connecting with Country, culture, creativity, and each other.

Beginning in September, the women will gather each Wednesday from 10:00am to 1:00pm at the Post Office Building, 134 Avon Terrace, York WA 6302, as part of the From Our Hands Program. Facilitated by Sultana Shamshi, participants will learn to design and craft unique jewellery pieces using natural materials found in nature, while sharing stories, building skills, and exploring creative expression in a supportive and culturally safe environment.

🌿 Week 5 Cultural Excursion To celebrate the journey and connections made throughout the program, the women will enjoy a day cultural excursion to Talbot Brook for a picnic, bush walk, and yarn on Country. This special day will provide an opportunity to connect with nature, share cultural knowledge, and enjoy time together outdoors.

We welcome Aboriginal women to join us as we gather, create, learn, and connect throughout this beautiful season of Kambarang.

This inspiring hands-on workshop will explore how seeds, pods, fibres, and other small treasures found in nature can spark creativity and become beautiful pieces of contemporary wearable art. Participants will experiment with ideas, materials, and design techniques to create unique jewellery that reflects personal stories and connections to Country.

Each piece will be unique, meaningful, and inspired by the natural world around us.

🌿✨ FROM OUR HANDS PROGRAM | FIRST WORKSHOP SESSION ✨🌿

Yesterday we were excited to kick off the first From Our Hands Program - WALK-MAKE-WEAR workshop with the talented Sultana Shamshi. 💜

The women enjoyed an engaging and creative session, learning jewellery-making techniques and creating their own beautiful, handcrafted earrings. ✨

💎 It was wonderful to see everyone sharing ideas, building confidence, learning new skills, and expressing their creativity through their designs.

The group also took part in discussions about an exciting potential project for 2027, exploring ways to continue showcasing the talents, stories, and cultural strengths of women in our community. 🌻🖤💛❤️

Workshops like these provide a valuable opportunity for women to come together, connect, create, and celebrate culture through art and creativity. We are looking forward to seeing how everyone's skills and projects develop over the coming weeks.
