It is with sad tidings that the York Volunteer Fire & Rescue brigade send condolences to the family of one of our life members Robert (Bobby) Edward Ashworth. Bobby joined the brigade in January 1953 and was a loyal member receiving his 40 year long service award in May 1995. He held the position of Foreman from January 1956 to December 1961. On the 3rd November 1968 he was awarded life membership to the brigade becoming it's 8th recipient of this prestigious acknowledgement of service to the brigade and community.

This morning we received a fire call to a pile of rubbish on fire in the middle of New street, York. This fire started in the rear compactor section of the rubbish truck as it conducted the weekly curbside collection. At this stage the cause is unknown, but it is a timely reminder to everyone to be aware of what you put in your rubbish bin.
Things like lithium batteries, disposable lighters and things that might cause a spark shouldn't be placed in the garbage.
The procedure for the rubbish collection company is to dump burning rubbish directly into the street, next time they might not be so lucky and the truck may be burnt.
Have a safe New Year from all the local Volunteers.

When wood burns, the carbon in the wood turns to carbon dioxide and floats up the chimney. Other substances in the wood do not burn. They are carried aloft by the heated air and are deposited on the chimney or flue walls as the air carrying them cools. Creosote is a tarry, black byproduct of burning wood. As we get into the colder part of winter, the conditions accelerate that form creosote, the colder the flue (especially on the roof) the more buildup is likely. It’s important to get your flue cleaned regularly, as buildup of creosote can cause a chimney fire.

With the colder weather upon us please remember to check your chimneys and flues.
