What if we've been looking at wealth the wrong way?

We often think of wealth as the money we have. But every useful thing starts somewhere else: with people, skills, knowledge, resources and the willingness to contribute.

Money is one way of exchanging that value, but it isn't the only way.

Community exchange gives us another way to look at what we already have. Instead of only asking, "What can I afford?", we can also ask:

What can I offer? What do I need? Who could I connect with?

Money Consciousness – What If We've Been Looking at Wealth the Wrong Way?

The Community Exchange System (community-exchange.org) recently published the Money Consciousness graphic featured below. It challenges many of the assumptions we've grown up with about money, wealth and the economy.

It isn't saying money is bad. Money is a valuable tool. Instead, it asks us to consider a deeper question:

Where does wealth actually come from?

Many of us have been taught to think of wealth as something that exists "out there" waiting to be earned or accumulated. Yet every useful thing in our lives begins with people. Food is grown by people. Homes are built by people. Knowledge is shared by people. Communities are created by people.

Money doesn't create those things. It simply helps us exchange the value that people have already created.

This idea sits at the heart of BrisLETS.

Our greatest wealth isn't measured by the number of Units in our account. It is found in the skills we can share, the knowledge we've gained, the experience we've lived, the resources we already have and our willingness to contribute to one another.

Every time someone teaches a skill, lends a tool, grows vegetables, repairs an item, helps with a computer problem or simply gives someone a hand, they are creating real wealth within our community.

Over the coming months we'll continue exploring some of the ideas behind Money Consciousness and what they mean for BrisLETS. We hope these articles spark conversation, encourage fresh thinking and remind us that strong communities are built not simply by exchanging money, but by recognising and exchanging the wealth that already exists within each of us.

As the Community Exchange System reminds us:

Exchange is the universal principle. Money is one possible method. Relationships and contribution build a thriving community.

Could your neighbourhood benefit from a Local Action Group?

This month's BrisLETS Trading Day is being held at Arana Hills, but our members live right across Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Redlands, the Bay Islands and surrounding areas.

One of our goals is to help members connect more locally through Local Action Groups.

Last year, for example, a Nextdoor member needed someone to collect and deliver sandbags during the floods. Another local member could have earned Units for their time, while the fuel costs were simply paid in Australian dollars.

That's just one example. It could just as easily be gardening, shopping for someone who's unwell, pet sitting, sewing, tutoring, sharing tools, helping with technology, or any of the hundreds of skills people already have.

Members post what they need and what they have to offer. Those small interactions start conversations. Conversations build trust. Trust builds stronger communities.

BrisLETS doesn't exist to build a trading system. It exists to help communities recognise and connect the wealth they already have.

As we head towards our AGM next month, we'd love you to start thinking about what you naturally enjoy doing and how those gifts could help BrisLETS continue to grow.

At our Northey Street stall we spoke with around 20 people who were genuinely interested in BrisLETS.

Because every skill shared helps more people experience the magic of BrisLETS.

Cherie created beautiful sprouting jars that attracted people to our stall.

Jessie designed the posters that caught people's attention.

Michael and Jessie spent the day chatting with visitors and answering questions.

Why come along?

More and more people are looking for stronger local connections, practical support, and a sense of community.

BrisLETS is a place where people come together to share skills, exchange goods and services, help one another, and build relationships that make life a little easier and a lot more interesting.

Local Action Groups are part of the BrisLETS structure, creating opportunities for people to connect with others in their local area around shared interests, activities and community projects.

Whether you have something to trade, something to offer, or you're simply curious, come along and experience what happens when people help each other as they would a friend.

BrisLETS members have spent 38+ years doing more than trading.

We’ve helped local businesses grow, supported flood clean-ups, shared plants, food and skills, run working bees, held community events, and shown up when members and community groups needed extra hands.

Because real wealth isn’t only money.

It’s knowing people who’ll lend a hand, share knowledge, open networks, and support each other through difficult times.

Imagine belonging to a community where your skills matter, your needs matter, and you don’t have to do life entirely on your own.

Getting more inquiries now as the world changes - who is interested in creating local community groups where you live?

BrisLETS has been running a community exchange in Brisbane for 38 years - where people trade skills, goods and time without needing money. The government describes it at the gift economy - it's like friends helping friends or neighbours.

We're looking to grow local groups (LAG) across the region so people can connect closer to home, not just drive to Brisbane.

We do the 3rd Sunday as it suits members who are long time friends/members, but you can create whatever day/date suits your group.
