Yeppoon Inlet Association -Incorporated The Yeppoon Inlet Association (YIA) is an Incorporated Not for Profit Association in Queensland.

In 2025, the YIA was registered as a Charity by the Queensland Government. Our charitable focus is on environmental projects within the Yeppoon Inlet.

Blast from the past! January 1972 and a Gladstone fisherman brings in a 250 kg+ black marlin. The newspaper storyline tells that marlin are rare out on the reef, but many of us have hooked into them while trolling and drifting baits for Spanish Mackerel east and north of Yeppoon and out towards the Swains Reef. We always enjoy the unexpected excitement of reels screaming and these very large fish leaping and tail walking and doing somersaults behind the boat and then we are glad to see them spit out the hook and disappear into the blue. (Thanks to regular contributor Peter Ball for sending us the newspaper clipping.)

Proudly Australian made, Simplex marine engines were manufactured in Sydney from the 1930's. In a previous post, a responder was asking about single cylinder Simplex marine petrol engines which used to be commonly found in small yachts and dories up to the 1960's. Here is a pic of a recently reconditioned one . The small Yanmar and Volvo Penta single cylinder diesels then took over in this space as they were more reliable and safer to operate.

More Captain James Cook history at the Cooktown Museum. A cannon and an anchor from the 'Endeavour' recovered from the reef where it ran aground, restored and on display. These relics had lain undisturbed on the bottom for 200 years. (Thanks William George for sending this pic.)

Time for some Captain Cook nostalgia from 256 years ago. In May 1770, Lt. James Cook was mapping Keppel Bay. The following month, the 'Endeavour' struck a reef at night on June 11, 1770 out from modern day Cooktown. To get off the reef, Cook ordered 50 tons of gear overboard to lighten the ship, including cannons, cannon balls, chain, anchors and the like. Almost 2 hundred years later in June 1969, a Cairns charter boat operator called Vince Vlassoff on the 'Tropic Seas' and an American research team using a magnetometer discovered the cannons and recovered them.

How the prices of things have changed over 50 years! In the early 1970's, Ron and Joan McDougall ran the 'Oceanus' on day trips and fishing trips out of Emu Park. The average wage then was $52 per week! A day trip to Keppel was $2.50 and a full day deep sea fishing was $3.50. You could hire the whole boat for a day for $80 for up to 60 people. What a great pic! It's about 1958 at Yeppoon Inlet before Anderson Park was reclaimed. A young boy named Les standing on the red navigation marker at the mouth of Figtree Creek. He has never lost his connection to the creek and for fishing in Keppel Bay. (Pic of Les Unwin of Zilzie.) Thanks also to follower Ian Cavanough for colourising and sharpening up the pic for us.
