Many locals will remember when IGA was known as Woody’s Supermarket—a small, family-style grocery shop.

Over the years, as Yeppoon has grown from a quiet coastal town into the vibrant CBD we know today, this business has grown alongside it.
What was once a humble convenience store has evolved into a well-loved, go-to spot for locals and visitors to grab their everyday essentials. It has long been part of the daily rhythm of the town

Livingstone Shire Council and members of Accessibility Capricornia have long been discussing the need for disability parking bays at the entrance of this store, and it's now a reality!

These bays are much more than just paint on the road. To be compliant with Australian Standards, accessibility parking must meet strict requirements—including appropriate dimensions, signage, surface conditions, gradients, and safe access to pathways and entry points.

With these additions, there are now four disability parking bays along this section of James Street—meaning the area is now above compliance, improving accessibility and ease of access for everyone in our community.
It’s a small change that reflects a bigger commitment: making sure our town centre continues to grow in a way that is inclusive, accessible, and welcoming for all.

This morning, Accessibility Capricornia Chair Macca and Cr Lance Warcon from Livingstone Shire Council joined Jeremy and Nicky from ABC Capricornia during their outdoor broadcast at the brand-new Cooee Bay Aquatic Centre.

Accessibility Capricornia was a key topic of discussion, highlighting the importance of creating communities, facilities and events that are inclusive and accessible for everyone.

And speaking of great access, the new aquatic centre is home to the region’s very first Changing Places facility! 🎉 These purpose-built amenities provide people with high support needs and their carers access to safe, dignified and accessible bathroom facilities, making it easier for more people to enjoy community spaces.

A huge thank you to Jeremy and Nicky and the ABC Capricornia team for helping shine a light on accessibility and inclusion across our region.

Accessibility Awareness Tour – Yeppoon Foreshore

Join Accessibility Capricornia for an Accessibility Awareness Tour of the Yeppoon Foreshore. Participants will have the opportunity to experience common access barriers by briefly immersing themselves into the world of disability, broaden their understanding of disability barriers, explore what works well, identify areas for improvement, and discuss ideas that could enhance access and inclusion along the foreshore.

The tour is designed to build awareness, encourage discussion, and provide an opportunity to hear a range of community perspectives on accessibility.

We particularly encourage people with lived experience of disability, as well as professionals involved in design, planning, building, landscaping and renovations, to attend. Bringing together lived experience and industry expertise can help foster a greater understanding of inclusive design and accessible communities.

This is more than building to standards, this is truely understanding user experiences which is equally important.

We haven't posted in a while, but that doesn't mean we haven't been busy!

We thought we would provide a quick update.

Under Council's Accessibility Minor Works Program, the group have been working closely with Council on 4 upcoming projects, further details below.

1) Priority seating at Yeppoon
The goal through this project is to ensure there is considered space for wheelchair seating, integrated with existing seating at the Yeppoon main beach Amphitheatre. As you would know, the large events on the foreshore can create very crowded areas. This is one way we can create more inclusive experiences during our busy events.

2) Disability parking bays suitable for both side and rear vehicle exit
The goal through this project is to provide an easier parking experience for those using wheelchairs or bulky mobility equipment. We've used some innovative design to ensure no matter how people exit their vehicle (either through the side door, or the rear of the vehicle) they will have a safe and accommodating experience,

3) Pathway connection
The goal for this project is to address a 'missing link' identified along a stretch of pathway on Ivey Street West. Providing the link is important as it assists in connecting disability units nearby to the pathway network. Council has worked alongside the Department of Housing to be able to implement a solution that we will see happen soon

4) Disability parking at Yeppoon IGA
The goal for this project is to include good access to our growing spaces. The need for disability parking for IGA has been discussed for a while now, and we are proud to say, after experiencing a number of barriers, we can now achieve this. When this one is completed we will share with you important considerations for disability parking bays - it isn't 'just a bit of linemarking' like many may think.

Watch this space as we will provide updates as these projects are rolled out with some further information.

We often here about people's experiences when attending events, in particular challenges with suitable toilet facilities and parking.

Do you plan public events?
This checklist has been designed for local event planners to consider inclusion and access during their planning process.

Access to a nearby disability portaloo can make such a HUGE difference to someone in a wheelchair wanting to attend your event.

There's many small considerations that can be made that make a real positive difference to your attendees experience!

Please share and/or tag our local event planners :)
