🐲YAY! They made it …and here is our update … direct from Di Richardson … crew member on the Ord River 55km marathon paddle!
——-🐲——-
Last Sunday 7 June 2026, 6 paddlers from Yarrawonga Dragon Boat team (Helen, Leonie, Jan, Bernie, Peter and me) joined forces with paddlers from Mt Beauty, Beechworth, and Dragonflies DBC to complete the 55km marathon paddle down the Ord River in the Kimberley, WA.
We set off from Kununurra at 4.30am and all 120 paddlers (8 boat loads) bussed to the Ord River dam. Quick breakfast and then into the boats around 7.15am.
We paddled through the most magnificent scenery, soaring red gorges and pristine water. The first section included some fast water and each boat had to be guided through safely. We stopped for morning tea at the 25km mark and then back into the boat for another 20kms before stopping for lunch.
Kununurra Dragon Boat Club do the most amazing job of organising this event. Catering was very well done, given it was just set up on the rivers edge. Huge thanks to everyone, as well as the support crew, SES, rescue boats and photographers.
With only just over 10kms to go we got back on the water, did a quick photoshoot in front of Elephant Rock (at the 50km mark) and then the last 5 kms on tired arms and dead water. The last kilometre we all dug deep and brought our boat home. We were exhilarated, exhausted and excited. I think we got in about 4.30pm.
I only saw 1 crocodile (other paddlers reported seeing more) but "they are only freshies" (!)
(Freshwater, not Saltwater crocodiles)
Marathon completed! Cheers and congratulations to all the paddlers and sweeps who made the event a success, sharing a common goal and a brilliant sense of kinship across the teams.
So now, what's next? Any ideas?
PS. We all showed up for breakfast next morning fighting fit, no injuries, no blisters, and all joints and muscles in working order. All that training paid off.
These photos are not in order....
