Yarrawonga College P-12 Community Workshop

Yarrawonga College P-12 Community Workshop The Community Workshop is located in Barry's Shed. Approximately 250 students access the Community Workshop every week.

The Yarrawonga College P-12 Community Workshop is a program that has been operating since 2000 when the school (Yarrawonga College P-12) determined that there was a high degree of interest amongst the students and their families as well as community members wanting to volunteer their time to work with students. The Community Workshop consists of approximately 60 volunteers from various cultural an

d artistic backgrounds. The aim of the program is to provide child centred activities and therapeutic support to students through a wide range of creative activities and mentoring by our volunteers. We act as a safe space for students who required and/or benefit from one-on-one assistance and therapeutic interventions. Our volunteers act as mentors for a number of students who attend the Workshop sharing their skills in a range of artistic forms including mosaics, woodwork, papier mâché, indigenous art, sculptures, weaving, acting and lots more. In 2018 thanks to a very generous donation from a community member, who saw firsthand the benefits that the Workshop provided for students, their families and our volunteers, we were able to have our very own purpose-built workspace. Most students attend on more than one occasion whether it be that they are timetabled to come during class, or they just come over at recess and lunch. As a result, every student at YCP-12 is given the opportunity to access this truly amazing program every year. As well as providing a creative space for students and community members, we also provide wellbeing and welfare support to those in need whether it be students and their families or a member of the community. We act as a support hub for our school families and members of the community who require support. Through this we are able to provide a range of assistance through, weekly food hampers, referring to other organisations and implementing supports that are meaningful and provide assistance for the individual and/or family.
