I have been asked recently what an auxiliary firefighter is ,so I thought I would explain the 3 basic levels of firefighters.
1. A Rural firefighter (yellow trucks) is an unpaid volunteer who has training and equipment for wild fires and grass fires. The trucks can go cross country and get into most hard to get to spots. Rural firefighters can be called to respond to fires day or night any day of the week.
2. A full time firefighter (red trucks) is a person who works 40 hrs per week as a firefighter. They have training in road crash rescue, house fires, ambulance assist, hazmat situations, and a wide range of other emergency situations.
3. An auxiliary firefighter (red trucks) is a paid position. This person has a normal full time job and when needed will go and respond to all of the same situations as a full timer. Auxiliary firefighters have all the same training for road crash rescue ect as full time firefighters. They can be called to respond to any emergency day or night any day of the week.
The red trucks are not designed for off road useage.
That being said Rural firefighters will help back up auxiliary and full timers, and the auxiliary will back up the rural firefighters when needed as well.
This is just a brief summary with a lot more specialist roles in all of the services.
