Mark Pearse was born in Western Victoria and he studied at the Art School of the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) graduating in 1962. With his wife Jill, he travelled on a scholarship to Europe where they stayed for five years. On their return to Australia they settled in Adelaide where Mark was appointed as art master in the Preparatory School at St. Peter’s College (1969-1975). In 1974 they established Pearse’s Uraidla Pottery in the Adelaide Hills. Later in 1979 they moved to Yankalilla with their three children and developed Pearse’s Pottery at Bungala House where they lived for 35 years. As they were both artists and community minded, their historic home became a hub of local artistic life.
Mark conducted pottery classes in his workshop and they organised life drawing workshops there from time to time. They also organised exhibitions of paintings, pottery and quilts, including by the Fleurieu Quilters and the Embroiderer's Guild, and hosted receptions, music concerts and literary events. Mark’s sculpture is represented in the Art Gallery of South Australia collection.

Exhibition launch at Waverley Park Homestead--attended by people associated with TREENET and Significant Trees Register.

On a day off last week TREENET’s director, Tim took time out to visit Waverley Park Homestead, a National Trust property in Willunga. His visit coincided with the opening of the ā€˜Trees in the Triangle’ art exhibition, showing works by mainly local artists of trees growing in the triangle between Kangarilla, Sellicks Beach, and Port Noarlunga South.

With ā€˜trees’ and ā€˜National Trust’ together in the same sentence, it wasn’t surprising that he bumped into retired Adelaide Botanic Garden Tree Advisory Officer, Tony Whitehill PSM, and former Chair of the National Trust of SA’s Significant Tree Committee, Mike Heath. Tim, Tony and Mike were treated to a tour of the house and the exhibition by National Trust of SA volunteer and local artist Susan Wardleworth.

The exhibition includes an impressive work by Susan which depicts the shade cast by a street tree. Susan’s tree model, a large-fruited SA blue gum (E. leucoxylon ssp megalocarpa), is no longer available for new works however since it was removed in its prime to support subdivision and development of the adjacent vacant lot. What a shame.

The stain glassed windows in St James church at Delamere feature St James Major, Jesus Christ, and St John, and St James Major. In 1889, young Archie Grundy unveiled the St James Major window to the memory of his mother Rosalie Grundy, who died giving birth to him.
The Friends of St James have contacted Mr Ken Grundy of Naracoorte who has sent an extract written by Archdeacon Morse and published in 'The Southern Churchman' in March 1888. Arch or Archie was the first cousin to Ken's father.
'It hath pleased God again to visit this parish and remove from amongst us one whom to know was to love, one who was loved by all...Rosalie Grundy (nee Lord) lived in the parish from her earliest childhood. Brought up, as it were, under the shadow of the church of St James which she dearly loved, she was always glad and willing to help in church work, either as an organist or in any way. She will be greatly missed.'
Archdeacon Morse said she had 'the satisfaction of seeing her week old infant baptised before she died' and he acknowledged 'the bereaved husband, who by his consistent and straight forward conduct has earned him [his neighbours'] esteem and respect'.
