Our community knows that diverse perspectives and leadership make agriculture stronger 🌱

That’s why we’re excited to share this Director opportunity with AgriFutures Australia — a chance to help shape the future of research, innovation and sustainability across Australian agriculture.

We encourage people from our Ability Agriculture community — including those with lived experience of disability, inclusive employment, and diverse pathways into ag — to consider how your perspective could contribute at a board level.

AgriFutures is seeking leaders who can bring:

• Strategic thinking and strong governance
• Financial oversight and risk management experience
• An understanding of how research and innovation drives real on-farm impact
• The ability to engage across industry, community and government

Experience across areas like agribusiness, research, ESG, governance, agtech, or commercialisation is highly valued — but equally important is a commitment to inclusive, forward-thinking agriculture.

This is an opportunity to ensure the future of rural industries reflects the diversity of the people within them.

At just 22 years old, Lincoln Budge’s life changed in an instant. A four-wheel-driving accident left him a paraplegic—an injury that could have taken him away from the land he loved.

But Lincoln wasn’t finished farming.

Through determination, adaptive equipment, and a deep commitment to the industry, Lincoln returned to agriculture with a renewed purpose. Today he works on the land while also using his voice to champion safety, inclusion, and better outcomes for people with disability across rural Australia.

Lincoln’s story is a powerful reminder that accidents can happen to anyone—and that with the right support and inclusive practices, people with disability can not only return to agriculture, but thrive within it.

This story is part of Ability Agriculture’s Inclusive Safety Series, proudly funded by the Victorian Government Farming Safe and Well Program, highlighting the real experiences shaping a safer, more accessible future for all.

🌱 Hear Lincoln’s story and help us build farms where everyone belongs.

Starting the year off with dad as chief tour guide on the farm and meeting our first University of Sydney biomedical engineering honours students Grace O’Donnell and Ashwin Babu whose engineering honours projects are investigating and designing adaptive equipment on farm for persons with disability.

Great to have them visit our beef farm on the mid north coast and for dad to show them some of the adaptations that have helped him navigate farming as a paraplegic.

Looking forward to see what our students come up with and excited to support them as a supervisor with Alistair McEwan.

We are thrilled to announce Maddie Lovell as a recipient of the Nuveen, a TIAA company Natural Capital Scholarship, proudly delivered in partnership with Ability Agriculture Foundation 🌾✨

Madeleine’s story is one of determination, resilience, and finding purpose through connection to agriculture. Growing up, she channelled her energy into music as a way to navigate life with ADHD and autism. But after completing high school and working through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic as a Patient Support Officer at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, a trip to a friend’s hobby farm near Toowoomba completely changed her trajectory. Immersed in the farm lifestyle, she discovered a deep passion for agriculture, the people behind it, and the endless opportunities to make a difference. Within a year, she made the bold move to Toowoomba to start a new life in the industry.

Today, Madeleine works full-time in the pulses and grains industry while pursuing her agricultural studies at UNE. She thrives on the blend of hands-on fieldwork and business operations, driven by her goal to help farmers build sustainable, future-focused enterprises.

Reflecting on her journey, Madeleine shared:

“That one week on the farm changed everything. Agriculture gives me purpose, community, and the chance to help others in a way that feels meaningful. I’m so grateful for the support that’s helping me grow into a career I truly love.”

The Nuveen Scholarship recognises and supports persons in agriculture who embody inclusion, innovation, and commitment to positive change. Madeleine’s journey is a powerful example of how lived experience, passion, and perseverance can lead to incredible new opportunities in the agricultural industry.

Congratulations, Madeleine! We can’t wait to see how your career continues to grow.
