We respectfully acknowledge the Malayan Emergency (1948–1960) as a period of profound hardship and sacrifice for the people of Malaya. During these years of conflict, many lives were lost and communities were deeply affected by violence, displacement, and uncertainty. We honour the memory of all who endured this difficult time—civilians, service personnel, and those caught between opposing sides—and recognise the resilience and strength shown by the people throughout the struggle. This period remains an important chapter in history, reminding us of the lasting impacts of conflict and the enduring value of peace, understanding, and reconciliation.

On this day, we honour the brave Military Working Dogs who have served Australia with distinction. From the front lines to humanitarian missions, their service reminds us that courage comes in many forms — and sometimes, it walks on four paws. Annually, the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) presents awards honouring the outstanding contribution of animals to Australia’s military, law enforcement and civilian service history.

This year, the Animal Distinguished Service Award was presented posthumously to Explosive Detection Dog Flo Joe, the first Australian EDD to locate an improvised explosive device (IED) in Afghanistan. Across four deployments over six years, Flo Joe’s work directly protected Australian personnel operating in some of the most heavily IED-affected areas of the conflict. On her fourth deployment, she recorded the highest number of finds in her section for that rotation.

During World War I, in 1917, American Salvation Army officers Helen Purviance and Margaret Sheldon were sent to the front lines in France to support the American Expeditionary Force. Their mission was to boost soldiers’ morale, and they quickly realized that simple comforts like hot tea and conversation were not enough for troops facing the harsh realities of trench warfare.

Purviance and Sheldon improvised with limited resources: they used artillery shells and wine bottles as rolling pins, and soldiers’ helmets filled with lard for frying the dough. Initially, they shaped the dough by hand into crullers, later creating more uniform donuts using tin cans as cutters. The donuts were made from basic ingredients—flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, eggs, and milk—and dusted with powdered sugar after frying. The donuts were an immediate hit, providing a taste of home and comfort to soldiers under extreme conditions.

Soldiers wrote home praising the treats, and the women became affectionately known as the "Donut Lassies".

In Honour of the Boer War Servicemen and Women

We remember the Australians who served with courage and resolve in the South African War. They left their homes to answer the call of duty, enduring hardship and uncertainty in a distant land. Some returned to tell their stories; many did not return at all. Their service stands as a testament to the spirit of sacrifice, mateship, and resilience. May their legacy endure in our hearts, and their names be spoken with gratitude for generations to come.

Lest We Forget.

Our participants (and one service dog, HG!) enjoyed a trip down to Picton for a day at Spur Ranch. Thank you to the team at Spur Ranch, to Creightons for supporting on the day with 2 vehicles and 4 staff members, and to The Entrance / Long Jetty Sub-Branch for use of their Mini Bus! It was greatly appreciated and the smiles from our participants say it all!

🎉 National Anzac Day Colouring Competition – Winners Announced! 🎉

Thank you to everyone who took part in this year’s National Anzac Day Colouring Competition. We were blown away by the response!

With over 580 entries from children across Australia, this year’s competition was truly special. Thank you to all our Veteran and Family Hubs nationwide who encouraged participation and helped make this such a meaningful event.

Our Event Ambassador Annabelle Wilson, together with Annabelle’s daughter Prim, took on the very tough (but rewarding) task of selecting our national winners for Category A and Category B.

And the winners are… 🎉

🏆 5–8 years category
Imani Rensen (6yrs) - Central Coast Veteran and Family Hub (NSW)
Imani’s prize is a $500 Kids Voucher

🏆 9–12 years category
Cael Simpson (9yrs) - Queanbeyan Veteran and Family Hub (NSW)
Cael’s prize is gaming supplies valued at $585, thanks to Veteran Gaming Australia.

We’d like to thank Veteran Gaming Australia for their generous prize donation. We’re sure there will be two very excited young people when they receive the good news!

This wonderful annual tradition continues to spark creativity, raise awareness, and strengthen connections for our young people as they learn about the sacrifices made - and still being made - by our past and present serving members and their families.

Thank you again to everyone who participated and supported this special competition.
