This month we are showcasing artist Shirl Nicholson

Shirl is a local Wynnum artist with a lifelong passion for creativity and artistic expression. After many years enjoying a variety of arts and crafts, she began her painting journey in 2021.

Although largely self-taught, Shirl has developed her skills through mentoring from fellow artists, as well as attending workshops and classes in both watercolour and acrylic painting. Her enthusiasm for learning and willingness to explore new techniques continue to shape her artistic practice.

In 2022, Shirl was invited to join the Queensland Art Collective and has since exhibited her work at a range of venues throughout Brisbane. In 2024, she became a member of the Wynnum Manly Art Group and exhibited on the Community Wall at the Old SchoolHouse Gallery in Cleveland. Her work has also been exhibited at the Brisbane RNA (Ekka).

During 2025, Shirl held a solo exhibition at Fieldtrip Art Gallery in Paddington and has recently showcased her work at the Manly Creative Market.

Drawing inspiration from her travels, Shirl's artwork primarily focuses on landscapes, architecture and places of interest encountered during caravanning adventures and family holidays. Working mainly in acrylics and watercolour, she enjoys capturing the character and atmosphere of the places she visits.

Always eager to expand her artistic horizons, Shirl is also exploring other mediums and subject matter, with a particular interest in developing her portrait painting skills.
