For the last 75 days, she's been living in her car.

Not because she made bad choices. Because her lease wasn't renewed, rents in her area jumped past what her pension could cover, and there was nowhere else to go.

She raised a family in a home not far from where her car is now parked most nights.

This is hidden homelessness, and it's the reality for a growing number of older women across Australia right now. Not sleeping rough where you'd expect to see it. Parked outside a friend's house. In a car in a shopping centre car park. Just out of sight.

We found her safe, temporary accommodation within a week of connecting with her. We're now working on a lease she can actually sustain.

This is the work. Getting women out of situations like this one, and into something stable, before another 75 days pass.

Jean Anderson raised children, ran businesses and travelled the world. She never imagined homelessness would be part of her story.

For three years, at 77, she couch surfed between Emerald and northern New South Wales, unsure where she’d sleep next. She’s one of a growing number of older women in Queensland facing the same reality, women over 55 are now the fastest growing group experiencing homelessness in Australia.

Through The Forgotten Women, Jean was offered a home at Kapalabar. Safe, comfortable, somewhere to finally hang her memories.

“I love everything about my place,” she says.

This Homelessness Week, Jean is sharing her story so more people understand what’s happening, and more older women get the chance to feel what she feels now: at home.

It started with a haircut.

Our founder owns a barber shop, and a few years back her team was doing a thousand free haircuts for people experiencing homelessness. That's when she started noticing something. Older women turning up with long hair. Women who simply couldn't afford a haircut.

So she went and did the research. turns out, women over 55 are Australia's fastest growing homeless population.

She saw women sleeping in their cars just to stay safe. That's where the idea came from, what if people could experience even one night of that reality? To build awareness, and to raise funds for real solutions.

Five years on, that idea is still going strong. this is how the forgotten women began.

Most people picture homelessness as sleeping rough on the street. But for older women, it often looks completely different.

Sleeping in their cars. Couch surfing. Moving between relatives. Hidden, and often invisible.

This week is Homelessness Week.

The theme this year is Homelessness Action Now, because we already know what works. What's missing is action at the scale and urgency this crisis demands.

Older women are one of the fastest-growing groups experiencing homelessness in Australia. Many are hidden in the data, overlooked by the systems meant to help them, and invisible in the wider conversation.

This week, we're adding our voice to the call. Because awareness alone isn't enough 🩷

A stroke changed everything for Leslie 💔

She could no longer work. Her lease was ending. And when she turned to Queensland Housing for help, she was told she didn't qualify, because she was a single woman without complex issues.

She was weeks away from having nowhere to go.

Then she found Mangrove Housing. Within a week, she had a place to stay. Within months, she had a permanent home in Redland Bay, one she's been told she can stay in for the rest of her life.

That certainty matters more than most people realise. For Leslie, it meant the end of a fear she'd been carrying alone.

This is what practical support looks like. Not a waiting list. Not a referral. A home.
