"You have to talk to people, because doors don't open if you don't."
Desley is a solo parent, a scientist, a sailor with more than 40 years of experience navigating the waters of Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. She has weathered storms most of us will never face.
But nothing in her previous life prepared her for the stress of housing insecurity.
Between 2022 and 2026, she moved six times. Landlords selling up, rents doubling, no warning and nowhere to go. Each move cost thousands. Each time, she packed up her life and started again.
"It's so stressful, it's out of your control and there's nowhere to go. Try doing all that in your 80s."
With support from the Department of Housing and Public Works, Wesley Mission Queensland, and Mangrove Community Homes through their Forgotten Women initiative, Desley now has a safe, secure home in a purpose-built complex at Capalaba, designed to meet the needs of older women.
She and her dog Milly are settling in. Meeting neighbours. Breathing again.
"Now it's taking me a little while to really believe that it has happened. This home is mine."
This is what it looks like when housing works the way it should.
