72. That's the average age of the women we support.

Women over 55 are the fastest-growing group facing homelessness in Australia. Not teenagers. Not people without work history or life experience. Women who raised families, built careers, paid taxes, and contributed to their communities for decades.

And now they're searching for somewhere safe to sleep.

This is happening quietly, in suburbs just like yours. If you've never thought about it, that's exactly the problem.

Projects like Jasen Street matter more than most people realise.

They give older women something that should never have been taken from them: safety, stability, and the freedom to live on their own terms.

When a woman moves into a place she can call home, everything shifts. She sleeps. She plans. She breathes.

This is what practical support looks like. Not a bandaid. A foundation.

She spent her early years working two to three jobs just to pay rent and put food on the table. A single mother. A long career in government contracting. Decades of showing up.

Then, at 60, the work dried up.

"As soon as you get silver hair in the workplace and look like you're over 60, all of a sudden there's no work available for you."

She went on unemployment benefits, borrowed $10,000 from a friend just to keep going. Kept applying. Kept getting knocked back.

"It's humiliating and it's degrading and you've just got no hope."

This is what hidden homelessness looks like for older women in Australia. Not a sudden crisis. A slow erosion, one closed door at a time.

The Forgotten Women exists for women like Anne. If her story moves you, we'd love to have you alongside us.

"You have to talk to people, because doors don't open if you don't."

Desley is a solo parent, a scientist, a sailor with more than 40 years of experience navigating the waters of Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. She has weathered storms most of us will never face.

But nothing in her previous life prepared her for the stress of housing insecurity.

Between 2022 and 2026, she moved six times. Landlords selling up, rents doubling, no warning and nowhere to go. Each move cost thousands. Each time, she packed up her life and started again.

"It's so stressful, it's out of your control and there's nowhere to go. Try doing all that in your 80s."

With support from the Department of Housing and Public Works, Wesley Mission Queensland, and Mangrove Community Homes through their Forgotten Women initiative, Desley now has a safe, secure home in a purpose-built complex at Capalaba, designed to meet the needs of older women.

She and her dog Milly are settling in. Meeting neighbours. Breathing again.

"Now it's taking me a little while to really believe that it has happened. This home is mine."

This is what it looks like when housing works the way it should.

This Saturday, Torque Ford is opening their doors for a Community Day and we're proud to be part of it.

From 11am–2pm on 23 May, the team at Torque Ford will be donating $100 to The Forgotten Women for every vehicle sold on the day. That's real, practical support going toward safe housing for older women.

Bring the family, enjoy the day, and know that showing up means something.

Three and a half years ago, this was just an idea.

A house on a block of land, and a quiet belief that one day, something more could be built here.

Today, 15 brand new one-bedroom units stand strong. Brick and mortar, yes, but what they really represent is home. Safety. Dignity. Things that many of the older women moving in here haven't had in a very long time.

From conception to completion, this happened because a community chose to show up and that means everything.

This is what's possible when people believe in something bigger than themselves. We can't wait to see what comes next.

15 older women are home 🏠

Not temporarily housed. Not waiting for something better. Home, in a place built for them, where they can age with dignity and security.

On Friday, we officially opened our first The Forgotten Women development, and it's hard to put into words what that means. This is what we've been working toward. Safe, secure, fit-for-purpose housing that gives women the foundation to rebuild and simply live.

This is what your support makes possible. Thank you for being part of it

Financial control is one of the most common, and least talked about, forms of domestic violence.

For older women, the impact can be devastating. Decades of depending on a partner for income, housing, and financial decisions can leave a woman with nothing in her name when a relationship ends. No home. No savings. Nowhere to go.

This is one of the leading pathways into homelessness for older women in Australia. And it's one most people never see coming.

If this carousel made you think of someone, share it. Awareness is the first step toward change.

When most people picture homelessness, they picture a man sleeping on a park bench.

But older women are one of the fastest-growing groups experiencing homelessness in Australia, and almost none of them fit that image.

They're women who worked, raised families, contributed. Women who, through divorce, illness, or a rental market that left them behind, found themselves with nowhere safe to go.

This is hidden homelessness. It's happening in every suburb, in every city, right now.

The Forgotten Women exists to change that.

Hidden homelessness doesn’t always look like what you think.

It looks like staying in a car.
Moving between temporary places.
Relying on others with no long-term security.

This is where many older women find themselves.

At The Forgotten Women, we work to move older women out of these situations
and into safe, stable housing.

Because no one should have to live like this.

Help us raise awareness by sharing this post.
