The Clivia show Thornleigh 2025

The first plant I saw for a starter
was Clivia miniata
Orange petals, yellow inside
Stamens darker, this plant has pride

There are different colours of yellow
Orange rich fading to soft and mellow
Cross pollination produces flowers
That you can observe for hours and hours

They can grow indoor or out
frost can knock them about
But they are hardy tough and strong
Coming back before too long

As a centre piece on a table for dining
you admire this bloom of Gods designing
The colours lift the spirit and heart
negative feelings are blown apart

So whether you're young or senior
They are an amazing plant for sure
Spend your money life is short
some Spend thousands on ones that are bought

So grow your own from plant or seed
it's amazing what you might breed
An amazing array to admire and grow
Well done to all at the Thornleigh show

🌸 Clivia Society of NSW Inc. – 2025 Spring Show Update 🌸

Greetings from the beautiful islands around Phuket, Thailand! 🏝️

Although I can’t be there in person this year, I’m delighted to share that the Spring Clivia Show opened today with a wonderful flow of visitors. The hall is buzzing with colour and conversation, plant and seed sales are going strong, and the atmosphere is full of enthusiasm.

One of the real highlights is hearing from the world-renowned “King of Clivias” himself, Peter Hey, whose knowledge and passion continue to inspire everyone present.

I may be soaking up island breezes, but my thoughts are with you all at Thornleigh, celebrating the beauty of Clivia and the spirit of our Society. Enjoy the show, and I look forward to hearing stories and seeing plenty of photos on my return.

My Journey with Clivias

My fascination with Clivias began in the mid-1970s, when I worked a second job in the nursery industry at Austins Nursery, Kirrawee. Alongside learning valuable propagation and landscaping skills, I discovered a deep respect for Clivias, remarkable plants admired for their toughness, shade tolerance, and their spectacular annual display of flowers.

By the 1980s, I had established my own landscaping business, and by the early 1990s, I was completely hooked. That passion soon grew into a commitment to developing new Clivia colours.

Over 20 years later, my work continues.

At the September 2025 Spring Show, my address will explore the challenges of pursuing Clivia perfection, with a focus on the elusive goal of achieving green Clivia flowers. The presentation will include technical insights for the purists, striking images, and details of the development process, together with examples of both the original source plants and the new styles created along the journey.

A PowerPoint presentation will showcase the progress of this breeding program from 2006 to the present, featuring some truly outstanding green Clivias.

There will also be time set aside for questions and discussion.

Society members will have the opportunity to obtain seedlings from my very latest green Clivia breeding work. A fine selection of green Clivias will also be offered in the Show Sales Section (with commission to the Society) and through my web shop: www.jcart.com.au
