This weekend members of our club executive attended the SLSNSW state conference. The theme was ‘strengthen and consolidate’ as the organisation, our branches and our clubs consider what has worked well and what we need to continue to ensure sustainability into the future across all areas of surf lifesaving.

Presentations and workshops explored culture, high performing teams, communication, use of AI, youth engagement, mental fitness as well as reflections on safety, emergency management and innovative ways to work with our community both in between and beyond the flags.

As we build on last years work and continue preparations for the season ahead, we will look to incorporate learnings and align our Woonona vision and goals with the state strategic plan and work collaboratively and innovatively to keep our community safe.

Congratulations to our newly elected 2026/27 Woonona Surf Life Saving Club Executive Committee, and thank you to all the members who have stepped up to volunteer and help lead our club this season.

Our club is built on the dedication of volunteers, and we're grateful to everyone who has put their hand up to support our members, programs and patrols.

We still have a few volunteer positions to fill. If you'd like to get involved and be part of another great season, we'd love to hear from you.

It was with great pride that we inducted the newest life member to Woonona SLSC at today’s AGM- Stacey Paddon.

Stacey has amassed almost 900 patrolling hours for Woonona, not accounting for the hundreds of hours across the various roles she has held in the club.

Stacey has done it all:

✅ Treasurer
✅ Patrol Captain
✅ Coach
✅ Athlete - surf boat, beach
✅ Surf boat sweep
✅ Watercraft Captain
✅ Member services officer
✅ Official
✅ Age Manager

✅ Mentor

We are grateful for all that Stacey has given and continues to give to our club and our community.

A club is as strong as its members and is built around commitment, service and building capacity in the club and its members. Stacey brings this and more, and continues to serve on our executive committee providing a wealth of knowledge and support to members of our club at all levels.

It’s one of the iconic vehicles associated with surf lifesaving and our beaches- the SSV or side-by-side vehicle. This vehicle allows us rapid access to and along the beach, to tow the IRB (boat), patrol trailer, transport essential equipment including first aid supplies, as well as people.

Given the heavy use and proximity to the salt water, these vehicles need to be replaced. Woonona SLSC were fortunate this year to receive a grant through a partnership between Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) and Bombardier
Recreational Products (BRP), which is now into its 15th consecutive year.

This longstanding partnership has enabled lifesaving services to operate at consistently high standards. BRP
remains the preferred powercraft provider and a national partner of SLSA, supplying affiliated clubs and services
with essential equipment including side-by-side vehicles (SSVs) and rescue watercraft (RWC).

We were able to secure an SSV that was used at the SLSA Aussie Championships at a reduced cost to the club.

However, this means this essential piece of equipment was still funded in majority by the club. As a small club these assets are essential but a significant financial investment. Many clubs are able to secure sponsors to assist with funding. We know our community values the safety provided on the beach by our lifesavers and will contribute to important causes.

Congratulations to our patrolling members Emmie and Zac (Woonona SLSC Junior Club Person of the Year) who have recently been named as school captains at Woonona High School.

One of the wonderful things about surf life saving is the diverse range of transferable skills our members both gain and bring both for themselves and the community.

Emmie and Zac demonstrate commitment, leadership skills, effective communication, teamwork, and pride in delivering a service to our community.

They are wonderful role models for our young people in the surf club and for their peers at school (and many that are across both!).

We are extremely proud of you both and look forward to watching you grow in your roles over the next year.

This morning Sunday, December 21 members of the Woonona Surf Life Saving Club stood shoulder to shoulder for three minutes of silence to pay their respects to the Bondi shooting victims and the life savers who attended to victims last Sunday evening.

Silent reflection on the water’s edge

Bondi Surf Bathers' Life Saving Club and North Bondi SLSC invite lifesavers across Australia to come together at the start of their patrols on Saturday to observe 3 minutes of silence to pay our respects. They would like to encourage you to wear your patrol uniforms, stand shoulder to shoulder in a line along the shore facing the sea, and observe a 3-minute silence before your patrol commences.

We stand shoulder to shoulder to show we are a united group of surf lifesavers and lifeguards across the country.

We encourage you to do this as a show of support for fellow lifesavers and recognition of the tragedy that has unfolded at Bondi while also reflecting on our respect and compassion for the Jewish community targeted by this attack.

We ask that there are no speeches, just silence, as we pay respects to those who lost their lives, those who risked their lives, those who worked so hard to save lives, and all of us who will never forget.
