This morning Sunday, December 21 members of the Woonona Surf Life Saving Club stood shoulder to shoulder for three minutes of silence to pay their respects to the Bondi shooting victims and the life savers who attended to victims last Sunday evening.

Silent reflection on the water’s edge

Bondi Surf Bathers' Life Saving Club and North Bondi SLSC invite lifesavers across Australia to come together at the start of their patrols on Saturday to observe 3 minutes of silence to pay our respects. They would like to encourage you to wear your patrol uniforms, stand shoulder to shoulder in a line along the shore facing the sea, and observe a 3-minute silence before your patrol commences.

We stand shoulder to shoulder to show we are a united group of surf lifesavers and lifeguards across the country.

We encourage you to do this as a show of support for fellow lifesavers and recognition of the tragedy that has unfolded at Bondi while also reflecting on our respect and compassion for the Jewish community targeted by this attack.

We ask that there are no speeches, just silence, as we pay respects to those who lost their lives, those who risked their lives, those who worked so hard to save lives, and all of us who will never forget.

We welcome Patrol A back to the beach this morning (and Patrol B this afternoon) under the watchful eye of patrol captain Troy.

It’s a beautiful day and we can’t wait to see our community and visitors back on the beach.

Please remember to know your limits and enjoy the water between the red and yellow flags. If in doubt, please have a chat with our amazing volunteers.

Woonona SLSC is open this Sunday 10am -1pm so come on down and meet the people who help keep our community safe. Find out about ways you can get involved- you don’t even have to get wet! There are roles and opportunities for everyone.

This weekend Woonona SLSC hosted another training session for SLS UAV’s with participants completing the operator induction program.

UAV pilots are club members who enhance our patrolling and surveillance through the use of UAV’s (or drones).UAVs help us to cover distance and access areas that we might not otherwise have the manpower, physical access or time to do. Becoming a UAV pilot also offers another ‘dry’ pathway for our members who may want to contribute to surf life saving in ways that don’t involve being in the water, celebrating the skills of all of our members and the unique contribution each member can make.

Our surf club location provides a great launch site for UAV’s with open space and visibility. We hope to see our club continue to be a hub for UAV training and activity.

It’s the SLSNSW Awards of Excellence tonight, celebrating the best of the best across our organisation.

Good luck to all of the nominees from around the state, to our Illlawarra nominees, and to our very own Gunther Enthaler.

Gunther represents everything wonderful about surf lifesaving and is one of the most committed people to keeping our community safe, upskilling members, and sharing his amazing wealth of skills and expertise. Alles gute, we are very proud of you!
