Buy local push gives Woombye shoppers chance to win

Woombye shoppers will have an extra reason to support village businesses in June, with a new buy local campaign offering a $250 prize for spending close to home.

Community Bank Woombye & Districts and the Woombye Community and Business Association have partnered to launch We Love Woombye - Buy Local Month, encouraging residents to support local businesses, local jobs and the village economy.

From June 1 to 26, customers who spend $20 or more at any business in the 4559 postcode can upload their receipt to the We Love Woombye - Buy Local Month page to enter the draw.

The winner will receive a $250 voucher to spend at a participating WCBA business of their choice. The campaign is designed to create a month-long lift for local traders by encouraging shoppers to choose Woombye first for everyday purchases, meals, services and gifts.

“The more they shop local, the more chances they have to win!” said Woombye WCBA & Friends President Milo Frawley.

Businesses are being encouraged to help spread the word by sharing campaign posts on social media, reminding customers to keep and upload receipts, displaying campaign posters or signage, mentioning the promotion at checkout and adding the campaign graphic to newsletters or community updates.

Bendigo Community Bank Manager Hayley Saunders said the campaign was about supporting the people behind Woombye’s shops and services while celebrating the village’s strong community spirit.

“By working together, we can create excitement across Woombye and encourage more people to shop locally throughout June,” she said.
The winner will be drawn on Buy Local Day on Saturday, June 27.

“Shop Local. Support Local. Love Woombye,” said Hayley.

Community bank offers big bank products, country town relationships, personalised service and support

There are many reasons to bank with a local bank, including more personalized service, faster and more flexible local decision-making, and often better rates due to lower overheads.

“We are always looking for ways to add value for our customers,” Community Bank Woombye & Districts Branch Manager, Ms Saunders explained.

“We want to know our customers' plans, goals and dreams for their financial future. This is the starting point from which we can review their current position and financial products to make sure they are getting the best deal, and that their money is working hard for them.

“At the moment, with rising interest rates and cost of living, an important way we can assist our customers is to do a comprehensive home loan review,” she said.

“Supporting our customers to secure a better product is enormously rewarding. When households are already feeling the financial pinch, this can make a huge difference to their lives.

“We have all the same products as the big banks, with more personalised service, and when people bank with us the whole community benefits,” Ms Saunders said.

“And we really enjoy supporting local business owners with small business loans, because our staff have a very deep understanding of the local economic landscape. This is something that the larger institutions just can’t match.”

Strong relationships with customers mean that customers of community banks report less of a “number” feel that tends to be associated with larger financial institutions.

At the same time the community bank invests in the local economy, aiding community growth and supporting small businesses.

For 17 years, the Community Bank Woombye & Districts has been an important service provider and supporter of the local community.

The Community Bank Woombye was founded when a group of local residents partnered with Bendigo Bank to create a convenient option for the people of Woombye to do their banking.

“Many people are not aware that our branch is owned by local shareholders, and most of our profits are channelled back into the community,” she said.

“Over the past 15 years, our board of volunteer directors have seeded over $850,000 back into the local community. Beneficiaries include the Woombye Library, the Woombye State School and P&C, the Sunshine Valley Men’s Shed, the Woombye Bowls Club, the Woombye Festival, Parent to Parent and many others.

“Alongside Grants and Sponsorships, the bank also offers scholarships to encourage local students to continue their education. We believe this is an extremely important investment in our young people, and by extension, the broader community.”

Changing banks can be a challenge, but the team at the Community Bank Woombye can help you every step of the way, and you can start to enjoy the benefits of dealing with a team of local experts, who are dedicated to helping you achieve your financial goals.

Microbrewery, cafés: The Big Pineapple resurgence continues with major upgrades

The Big Pineapple is set for another major step in its revival, with $5 million in Queensland Government funding announced for upgrades to the heritage-listed Sunshine Coast attraction.

The funding will support the Big Pineapple Rejuvenation project, aimed at continuing improvements to one of Queensland’s best-known tourism landmarks and encouraging more visitors to spend time at the Woombye site.

The project will deliver upgrades to the main building complex, including glazing replacement, veranda repairs and energy efficiency improvements.

The revitalised precinct is also expected to include a family-friendly microbrewery, cafés, retail outlets, a restaurant, sports bar and function facilities.

The funding follows a major refurbishment of the internal structure of the Big Pineapple, completed in 2024.

The $5 million commitment has been made through the Queensland Government’s $80 million Tourism Icons Investment Fund, under Destination 2045. Projects funded through the program must have government funding at least matched by the proponents.

Big Pineapple owner Peter Kendall said the attraction had been loved by generations of locals and visitors, and the funding would help preserve its heritage while adding new experiences.

“The rejuvenation of this iconic tourism attraction will include a family-friendly microbrewery, cafés, retail spaces, and a high-quality restaurant and function facilities – upgrades that will attract more visitors to the Sunshine Coast, while creating jobs and boosting the local economy,” Mr Kendall said.

“Thanks to this Queensland Government support, we can continue to preserve this iconic attraction while introducing exciting new experiences, ensuring The Big Pineapple remains a vibrant and cherished destination for years to come.”

Member for Nicklin Marty Hunt MP said the funding was a major win for the community. “The Sunshine Coast is open for business and rolling out the welcome mat, with plenty to see and do today and even more to come,” Mr Hunt said. “The Big Pineapple upgrade is a win for our local community, creating jobs and new opportunities while giving visitors even more reasons to come and experience this iconic destination.”

Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Mark Stoeckel said the Big Pineapple remained one of Australia’s most loved tourism icons. “Almost everyone has a story, memory or photo connected to it, and it has played an important role in shaping the Sunshine Coast tourism industry over many decades,” Mr Stoeckel said. “It’s incredibly exciting to see the redevelopment of the precinct progressing through this grant support.”

Tourism Minister Andrew Powell MP said the investment was designed to give visitors more to see and do, encourage longer stays and support local jobs and tourism operators. “This is what the Home of the Holiday as part of Destination 2045 is all about, investing in our icons and giving people more reasons to visit. “We’re delivering new experiences that give visitors more to see and do, encourage longer stays and support local jobs and tourism operators.
