We work alongside individuals, families, carers and coordinators to tailor supports. Sunshine Welfare And Remedial Association was founded in 1975 by twin sisters Dorothy and Moyia O'Brien, originally located at Roma Street. The "Pink Twins" were amongst the first occupational therapists in Australia. They have enabled thousands of adults with disabilities to engage with the social and economic co

mmunity and their legacy continues today. We provide choices of skills development and supports for clients to achieve their own goals and aspirations. Our curriculum provides a wide range of options to suit all abilities. Amongst the skills provided include independent living, domestic skills, baking, self-catering, hospitality, metal recycling, horticulture, physical activity, developing social interaction, friendships, and contributing to the community. Developing these skills are acquired through key learning areas; Sunshine Cafe, Sunshine Bakery, Community Access, Recycling Enterprise, Horticulture, Communication Skills, Creative & Performing Arts, Learning Skills for Independence, and Education and Employment Training. If you would like to join the SWARA community in any way, please feel free to contact details listed.

With Spring just around the corner what better way to spend the day than in the garden.

Gardening is a wonderful way to enjoy the fresh air, stay active and connect with nature. There’s something rewarding about getting your hands in the soil, especially when you get to try out the new fresh crops - how good are home grown ripe tomatoes!

Our support workers can assist participants with in-home supports - including gardening!

In 1975, twin sisters Moyia and Dorothy O’Brien, affectionately known as the pink twins for their matching pastel outfits and irrepressible warmth, opened the doors to something new in Spring Hill,Brisbane. As occupational therapists, they had seen how many people with disabilities were excluded from everyday life. Too often, these individuals were forgotten, left without community, purpose or opportunity.

The sisters imagined a different way, a place where people could belong, learn, and experience the joy of being truly seen. With no government funding and little more than determination, they transformed an old cottage on a derelict block into a vibrant hub of hope and creativity. They called it β€˜swara’ – the Sunshine Welfare and Remedial Association – a name that captured their belief that sunshine means energy, light and love.
