To celebrate QPASTT’s more than 28 years in Toowoomba, our Toowoomba Team proudly donated a Friendship Bench to TAFE Queensland .

The bench symbolises the enduring partnership between QPASTT and TAFE Queensland, and our shared commitment to supporting newly arrived communities to thrive. We were honoured to mark this special occasion with a lovely acknowledgement ceremony during Refugee Week last month.

Most importantly, we acknowledge the strength, knowledge and contributions of people from refugee backgrounds, who continue to enrich the Toowoomba community.

AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.

It will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, the system will be tested across Australia.

On Monday 27 July, your mobile devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and smart watches, may receive a test alert.AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.

The test times across Australian time zones are:
• 2:00 pm AEST (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS)

The message will vibrate and include a loud, siren-like sound that lasts about 10 seconds. If this could disrupt you or cause you or a loved one to feel unsafe, please turn off your mobile devices or switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time in your location, and leave them off for at least one hour.

As this is just a test, you don’t need to do anything, but in an actual disaster you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and others safe.

This NAIDOC Week, we celebrate 50 Years of Deadly, a milestone that honours five decades of recognising the strength, resilience, achievements and cultural richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

At QPASTT, we see every day how culture, connection and community play a vital role in healing and wellbeing and we proudly stand in solidarity with First Nations communities, and reaffirming our commitment to reconciliation, truth-telling, and creating spaces where people can heal, belong and thrive.

Yesterday we caught the incredible show 'Lose to Win' at QPAC. Congratulations to writer and performer Mandela Mathia on such a powerful and deeply moving work.

Lose to Win takes audiences through an emotional journey of displacement, resilience, family, community and the search for home. It was funny, heartbreaking, inspiring and a privilege to experience.

We were also proud to support Brazil Pele, a QPASTT Leadership Ambassador, to join the post-show Storytelling for Healing panel and speak about his own experiences of identity and belonging. Congratulations to all panellists, including Huda Akhlaki and host Jesmine Cheong for contributing to such a meaningful discussion about the role storytelling can play in healing, connection and understanding.

Thank you to QPAC and Multicultural Australia for helping bring these important stories and conversations to the stage. Lose to Win has a couple more shows this weekend in its Brisbane season, we recommend everyone go and check it out!

This Pride Month, we celebrate the strength, diversity, and contributions of LGBTQIA+ communities, while recognising the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.

At QPASTT, we know that inclusion is more than acceptance, it is about belonging. It is about creating spaces where people can live authentically, have their voices heard, and participate fully in community without fear of discrimination.

That is why we are proud to support Third Q***r Culture, a peer social group for LGBTIQ+ people from diverse backgrounds who have experienced seeking safety in Australia. Through connection, creativity, and advocacy, Third Q***r Culture creates opportunities for people to build friendship, find belonging, and express a “third culture” that embraces both queerness and cultural pride.

Together, we remain committed to fostering environments where diversity is celebrated and everyone is supported to thrive, this Pride Month and every month.

Today, on the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, QPASTT stands with survivors of torture and trauma in Queensland and across the world.

Torture is never justified. Its impacts can be profound and long lasting, affecting people’s sense of safety, trust, health, family, identity and belonging.

This year, we also acknowledge the new Charter of Rights of Victims and Survivors of Torture - a powerful reminder that survivors are not defined by what was done to them. They are rights-holders, leaders, parents, workers, students, community members and people with hopes for the future.

At QPASTT, we see every day that recovery is possible when people are met with safety, dignity, specialist support, cultural understanding and justice.

On this day, we honour the strength of survivors and renew our commitment to walking alongside people as they heal, belong and thrive.

Every person who seeks safety carries a story, a story shaped by courage, resilience and the determination to rebuild.

World Refugee Day is an opportunity to recognise the journeys of people from refugee backgrounds and the strength it takes to create a new sense of home after experiences of displacement, uncertainty and loss.

For many survivors of torture and trauma, arriving in a place of safety is only the beginning. Healing and rebuilding take time, and are supported through connection, belonging, recognition and communities that create space for people to feel seen and valued.

At QPASTT, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to heal, belong and thrive. Today, we acknowledge the strength of refugee communities and continue our commitment to standing alongside people on their journeys towards safety, connection and a future filled with possibility.

Mental health and su***de prevention must include everyone.

For many people from refugee and migrant backgrounds, mental health support can be harder to access. Language barriers, stigma, unfamiliar systems, racism, settlement stress and past experiences of trauma can all affect whether someone feels safe to seek help.

The data also reminds us that su***de risk is not the same across all communities. For refugee and humanitarian entrants and other permanent migrants, su***de rates increase with time since arrival in Australia - showing how important long-term, culturally responsive support is.

This is why QPASTT staff are taking part in The Push-Up Challenge. We are pushing for better mental health, but also for systems that are safer, more accessible and more responsive to the diverse communities who call Queensland home.

This June, QPASTT staff are taking part in The Push-Up Challenge to raise awareness and funds for mental health and su***de prevention.

Across 24 days, participants are challenged to complete 3,307 push-ups - representing the 3,307 lives lost to su***de in Australia in 2024.

For us, this is a way to stand alongside people, families and communities impacted by su***de and mental ill health, and to support conversations that reduce stigma and strengthen connection.

Every contribution helps support mental health awareness and su***de prevention.

This Refugee Week, we honour the strength, dignity and contributions of people who have sought safety in Australia and around the world.

Behind every statistic is a person, a family, a story - of forced displacement, survival, loss, hope and rebuilding.

People from refugee backgrounds often arrive carrying the impacts of war, persecution, violence, torture, grief, disrupted education, family separation and long periods of uncertainty. These experiences can affect safety, trust, identity, connection and wellbeing long after a person reaches a place of refuge.

But refugee stories are never only stories of trauma.

They are also stories of courage, culture, leadership, care, community, enterprise, creativity and contribution. Across Queensland, people from refugee backgrounds enrich our schools, workplaces, neighbourhoods and communities every day.

At QPASTT, we know that healing happens through safety, connection, dignity and justice. This Refugee Week, we recommit to walking alongside survivors of torture and trauma as they heal, belong and thrive - and to building communities where people seeking safety are welcomed, understood and supported.
