New projections from the Daffodil Centre estimate that the number of Australians living with or beyond cancer is projected to rise from 1.66 million in 2025 to more than 2.6 million by 2050.

This reflects progress in cancer research, early detection and treatment. It also means more people may need treatment, monitoring and ongoing support after cancer.

Looking ahead, precision cancer prevention aims to help us better understand cancer risk earlier. This could support earlier action to help prevent some cancers or find them sooner; reducing the future impact of cancer on people, communities and Australia’s health system.

The way endometrial cancer is diagnosed could be changing.

A new paper published in the International Journal of Gynecological Cancer sees Professor Martin Widschwendter, Director of the Daffodil Centre, a partnership between Cancer Council NSW and the University of Sydney, advocate for a new approach to investigating abnormal uterine bleeding.

The paper suggests current diagnostic pathways, which often rely on transvaginal ultrasound, may result in unnecessary invasive procedures and can miss some cancers. Emerging molecular testing using a simple cervicovaginal sample could provide a less invasive way to identify people at higher risk earlier.

If you experience bleeding after menopause, between periods, or any bleeding that is unusual for you, speak with your GP.

1 in 3 cancers can be prevented

In Australia approximately 44,000 cancer cases each year are preventable.1

We all know about the dangers of smoking and sun exposure.

Evidence now shows that nearly as many cancer cases are caused by a combination of the following lifestyle choices as smoking:

Drinking too much alcohol
Being overweight
A lack of physical activity
Eating too much red and processed meat
Not eating enough fruit and vegetables

🌼 Daffodil Day is next Thursday! 🌼

For 40 years, Australians have come together to share a message of hope for everyone affected by cancer.

When Daffodil Day began in 1986, the five-year cancer survival rate was just 46%. Today, thanks to community support and investment in cancer research, it has risen to 72%. 💛

In 2025, Australians raised more than $5 million for lifesaving cancer research. This year let's do it again.

Keep an eye out for Daffodil Day volunteers in your community next Thursday and donate if you can. Every dollar helps fund vital research and brings us closer to a future where everyone diagnosed with cancer has the best chance to survive and thrive.
