Marine Rescue Wooli would like to express their condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of all those who affected by last night’s tragedy and to the wider community of Ballina and Marine Rescue NSW.

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

“These two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

“We are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

“We ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,” Commissioner Andrews said.

On Anzac Day, Marine Rescue NSW honours the bravery and service of those who have served, and continue to serve, our country.

On Saturday, Wooli Marine Rescue members stood alongside our community at services, marches, wreath layings and in quiet reflection.

Then in the afternoon the traditional two-up at the Wooli Bowling and Recreational Club was a major fund raiser for our Unit for the replacement rescue vessel.

Thanks to member Marty Hutching and community members Rodney McSkinning and Doug Jones for running the event.

Also, thanks to the Bowling Club and the Tennis Club for their support, and to those circulating with the collection buckets.

Thank you to the public for their donations. It’s only with a supportive and generous community that our volunteers can provide a rescue service.

Our bar this morning is rated ‘Extreme Caution’, experienced skippers only.

The wind is currently SW at 5 knots but is expected to increase to 15-20 knots throughout the morning.

The tide is running out to a low at 10.40 am and the swell is around 1 metre.

He bar has waves breaking across with some small breaks.

The skipper in this video did an awesome job of navigating out through the waves on the bar.

On Tuesday, our Unit Commander and one of our new members travelled to Yamba to see how the build on our new rescue vessel is progressing.

Our new vessel is at the fit out stage, with 6-8 weeks to go until completion.

Thanks to generous donations from Wooli Hotel Motel Social Club, Hill to Sea Real Estate (Ron Plowman), several current and past Wooli Radio Club members and donations collected from the Lawson Close Monster Garage sale on Easter Saturday, our funds for the new vessel and ongoing maintenance and operational costs are looking healthier.

Great community contributions and very much appreciated.

Crew training on the river today.

A strong Southerly blowing 15-20 knots with gusts to 30 knots is blowing throughout the morning today making it unsuitable for training at sea.

We have three qualified crew and two crew trainees on board today who will be put through a variety of tasks such as Man Overboard (MOB), fire emergency and grounding along with some helm and navigation practice.

Here we have one of our crew trainees assisting with lowering the vessel into the water from the airberth. Upon return to the wharf the vessel will be placed back on the airberth and the airberth raised using generator located in the tray of our MR ute.

Our rescue vessel Wooli 30 was tasked to assist a distressed vessel (DV) fishing out near NW Solitary Island early this morning.

The DV had fuel issues, conditions were favourable and a crew of three responded to the incident.

A timely reminder to check fuel levels before going to sea in these times of high fuel prices and increased theft of fuel.

Good job, well done crew!

Our bar at Wooli, when this video was taken this morning at 0600 hrs, was rated ‘Extreme Caution’. This skipper waited for 25 minutes before getting out.

Wind from the SE at 6 knots and high at 10:30 am.

The tide was still running out at 6 am and the tide and swell made it tricky to get out.

02/04/2026

Happy Easter to all!

Today our bar at Wooli is rated ‘Usual Caution’ with 0 knots of wind at the moment increasing throughout the morning to 10 - 15 knots from the SE.

There is an occasional wave breaking across the bar on a flood tide coming in to high at 0930 hrs.

The swell is already big here in Wooli, no boats out this morning and the bar is rated ‘Not recommended’.
