Prostate cancer is the most common form of internal cancer in Australia with 1 in 4 men at risk of developing prostate cancer in their lifetime. In 2008 more than 20,750 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in Australia and 3,000 men died from the disease. Each year prostate cancer claims more men’s lives in this country than breast cancer does in women. Australian Prostate Cancer (APC) was

established to assist with the funding of vital medical research into the detection and treatment of prostate cancer, as well as preventing the metastatic spread of the disease. APC funds clinical and laboratory based research conducted at the Basil Hetzel Institute for Translational Health Research and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in South Australia. Her work focuses on allostatic load, the cumulative "wear and tear" experienced during and after cancer, helping improve the health and wellbeing of people beyond their diagnosis.

For years, Ron was fit, healthy and on the tennis court most weeks.

But then he noticed something wasn’t quite right. He was having trouble with his urine flow, and tests soon confirmed elevated PSA levels, an early indicator of prostate cancer.

With support from his medical team, Ron chose to monitor his condition carefully. More than a decade later, he’s still active and grateful his cancer hasn’t spread.
