HomePlace Disability Support Service

HomePlace Disability Support Service We are a community-based organisation providing lifestyle support for individuals with disabilities to enable them to live confidently in their own home

HomePlace is an organisation built on the belief that every individual has the right to a secure home and active participation in the life of the community. Established in 1989, HomePlace was formed by a group of parents who were seeking to secure an independent future for their intellectually disabled adult children

These parents wanted to feel confident and assured that their children, who the

y had cared for until adulthood, could move into their own home, and be well supported. Today, this sentiment is just as strong as it was at HomePlace’s inception, with the organisation offering personal and individualised disability support. We work in partnership to provide support that is personalised to our participants’ wants and needs and moving them towards a more meaningful life.

Today is the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development (21st May)! 🌏

It is more important than ever to protect different cultures and ways of life.

At HomePlace, we are lucky that more than half of our staff have come from other countries. ✈️

We also recognise how hard it can be for people living with disability, and their families and supporters, from different cultures to find the supports and services they need to live big, rich lives.

We always focus on truly getting to know each person we support. 💬

By working together with people living with disability and their supporters, we make sure that we respect how each person chooses to live their life and the supports they might have from other providers. 🤝

To take their rightful place at the heart of community, people living with disability from all cultures must be able to choose a support team that helps them reach their goals. 💜 💚

Did you know that most websites you visit have about 61 issues on their homepage that make it hard for people living with disability to use (WebAIM Million Report, 2020)? 🤔

Today, on Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we want to get everyone talking, thinking, and learning about digital access and inclusion and the barriers faced by the more than 1 billion people living with disability around the world. 🌐 ♿

At HomePlace, we are proud to have a website that was designed with accessibility in mind, including:

• An Easy Read webpage for people living with intellectual and/or cognitive disability. ✅

• A built-in accessibility tool from Elementor allowing you to change the text size, font, and colour contrast to suit your needs. ✅

• Alt text on images for people who are blind and have low vision. ✅

• Closed captions on videos for people who are Deaf and hard of hearing. ✅

We are always looking for ways to make our website easier to use for everyone!

You can visit our website and let us know your thoughts here: https://tinyurl.com/da7sr93d

What better way for our HomePlace community to get ready for the cooler months than with a movie night featuring ‘Cool Runnings’? ❄️ 📽️ 🍿

The people we support and our staff were delighted to mark the end of summer with this funny film inspired by the true story of the first Jamaican Olympic bobsled team. 🇯🇲 🏅

We love creating opportunities for our participants to engage in activities they enjoy, meet new people, spend time with friends, and be inspired to take on new roles in their communities! 🙌

On ANZAC Day (25th April), we honour and remember everyone who has fought to protect our country. 🫡 🇦🇺

We recognise that many veterans now live with disability because of their service. ♿

We thank them for their courage and sacrifice, and we respect and support the continued contributions of veterans in our communities. 💜 💚

Could you be this person’s new housemate? 🏡 👋

She is looking for someone who is keen to share a house in the North East of Adelaide, preferably in the Modbury area.

She is a woman in her early 60s, who is compassionate, nurturing, and friendly, and enjoys a quiet home and her personal space.

She has interests in:

• Music of the Elvis and Cliff Richard era. 🎵

• Movies, ranging from musicals like “Sister Act” to war movies and even thrillers. 🍿

• Baking–her scones and pastries are highly sought after by her family! 👩‍🍳

Her NDIS funding is not fully aligned with her support needs, however, her Support Coordinator is actively engaged and gathering evidence for a plan review.

She is looking for someone who is:

• Preferably another woman of a similar age, but this is not essential (it could be someone younger who would appreciate living with a nurturing, mature person). ✅

• Friendly and comfortable with family and friends visiting occasionally (strong communication skills are not essential). ✅

• Respectful of personal space. ✅

• A non-smoker. ✅

This shared arrangement would be suitable for someone:

• With or seeking Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funding. ✅

• Looking to move into a home where NDIS funding can be used to share supports and enjoy Supported Independent Living (SIL) or Community Participation, with HomePlace or another preferred provider. ✅

• Ideally looking to live in Adelaide’s North East/Modbury area. ✅

• Not looking for urgent accommodation, but would like a mindful and careful approach to finding a compatible person and SDA housing. ✅

Does this living arrangement sound like a good match for you or someone you support?

Please contact us via our website https://homeplace.com.au/contact/ or email [email protected] to express your interest. ✉️

Today, 7 April, is World Health Day! 🩺 🫀

The theme for 2026 is ‘Together for health. Stand with science.’

This year, we recognise that Australians living with intellectual disability still aren’t getting the health care they need when they visit a doctor, hospital, and other health services. ♿️ 🏥 ❌

Australians living with intellectual disability:

• Die 27 years younger than other people.

• Have to go to hospital 4 times more than other people.

• Don’t get the right health care early to stop them from getting sick (Council for Intellectual Disability, 2025).

We stand with people living with intellectual disability and their supporters to ask for:

• The Government to focus on making better health care for people living with intellectual disability right away, including giving more funding to health services. ✅

• Health workers to get better training to support people living with intellectual disability, including longer appointment times and how to listen and explain things in the right way. ✅

By standing with the facts and evidence-based solutions, we can work together to create a healthier future for all. 🔍 🤝

Today, 2 April, is World Autism Understanding Day! ♾️ 🧠 🌈

How well do you really understand autism?

Almost 1 in 4 Australians think Autistic people should change how they act to fit into society (YouGov, 2026 – research for Aspect - Autism Spectrum Australia).

This year’s theme, “If you learn I’m Autistic, I want you to…know, say, do,” reminds us that Autistic people shouldn’t have to change who they are.

Instead, we should learn how to support them better at school, work, and in everyday life. 🤝

Autistic people want you to:

• Know they have their own strengths, interests, and ways of thinking. ✅

• Say “How can I support you?” ✅

• Do things like respecting their personal space and understanding that loud or busy places can be overwhelming. ✅

Together, we can help create a world where Autistic people feel accepted, understood, and free to be themselves. 🌟

Happy World Down Syndrome Day! 💛 💙

Today, March 21st, we celebrate people living with Down syndrome who enrich our communities with their talents, strengths, and individuality.

Everyday at HomePlace, we see the meaningful and creative ways people living with Down syndrome connect with people, build friendships, pursue goals, and live fulfilling lives. 💜 💚

This year’s message is 'Together against loneliness.' 🤝

Inclusion is more than being present—it’s about belonging, being valued, and feeling truly connected. Everyone deserves that.

To people living with Down syndrome: thank you for the laughter, honesty, and positive impact you bring to our community. 🌟

We celebrate you—today and always.
