Woodside Community Hall

Woodside Community Hall The Woodside Community Hall is also Woodside’s Emergency Hub for Recovery & Resilience, we are the home of Woodside Landcare and Woodside Pickleball Club.

Our hall is available for hire for community or private events. [email protected] The Woodside Community Hall was previously known as Woodside Mechanics Institute and Free Library. It was established in c1888 and was located between the Woodside Primary School and Catholic Church. Social History:
A Mechanics Institute committee meeting was called in January 1888 to make arrangements for h

aving building plans drawn up however it was cancelled as insufficient numbers turned up. A hall was eventually erected and opened on Wednesday evening, 16 January 1889 with a concert and ball. In that year the Woodside Mechanics Institute received a government building grant for 62 pound/11/5. Other grants were received in the following two years. In January 1890 a Grand Concert in aid of the piano fund was held in the hall and in February 1894 a concert to raise hall funds. A popular activity in the 1890’s to raise funds for the Institute was an annual sports day on Easter Monday on the recreation reserve. In 1893 the library had 450 books. Its opening hours were 9am to 9pm each day and 2pm to 5pm Sundays. Over the years there had been 1000 visits. In 1932 honorary secretary James Cantwell forwarded the annual hall registration application to the Health Department. An inspection was carried out in the following year and a number of matters needed attending to. Cantwell successfully asked the Department for and extension of time to complete the requirements as “it would be difficult if not impossible to collect a sufficient amount of money at the present time from the members of the public interested in the Institute on account of the serious financial depression now occurring and the very small revenue obtained from the Institute”. In early 1963 the Woodside Mechanics Institute was destroyed by fire. The current Woodside Hall was erected in 1963 on the current site of land donated by the family of Mr Noel Walpole.

Hall Stories is not a history lesson nor is it a case of gathering stories from the audience to make the show. Audience members will simply arrive and be entertained and amused by a preplanned show then enjoy a supper (by donation) prepared lovingly by the hall committee.
