This article reinforces what we see every week in our unit. Cadets don’t just learn skills, they build character.

Through discipline, teamwork, leadership, and service, young people grow in confidence and capability, setting them up not just for today but for the future.

I’ve been reading “Building Character and the Nation: The ADF Lessons for Young Australians” and it reinforces something many of us already see in practice. The ADF cadet model works. Not just in building skills, but in shaping character.

Cadets develop discipline, respect, leadership, teamwork and a genuine sense of service. And the data backs it.

98% of cadets say the program equips them for life.

That’s not a small outcome. That’s a clear signal that when young people are given structure, expectations and purpose, they respond.

We see this every day in military-connected children too. They grow up navigating change, taking on responsibility early, and understanding what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves. These are not just nice qualities to have. They are foundational.

The opportunity now is how we translate this into everyday environments…

What would it look like to embed clearer expectations, structured leadership opportunities and service-based learning into schools?

Could elements of the cadet model extend beyond education into sport, community programs and youth services, creating consistent pathways for young people to build these qualities early and carry them through life?

The evidence is there.

When young people are grounded in strong values and clear expectations, they don’t just get through school.

They thrive.

ANZAC DAY 2026

Cadets from 412 ACU, alongside Commander SA AAC Brigade COL Illona Horan, honoured the memory of those who served at this morning’s ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Lobethal.

Lest we forget.

🌟 Community Connection in Action 🌟

Recently, our Cadets had a great night visiting the Torrens Valley Scout Group, passing on their knowledge in RATEL, navigation, fieldcraft, and first aid to the cubs and joeys.

The evening finished with some fun team‑building games, reinforcing the skills learned in a relaxed and engaging way.

It was a great showcase of our Cadets’ leadership and confidence, and great to work alongside another local youth group building skills and connections together. 🤝
