📮 What if our local Post Office was replaced by parcel lockers and a vending machine?

As part of the Australia Post Retail Network Inquiry, there are reported plans and alternative service models being considered that could see some licensed Post Offices transition away from traditional face to face services towards self service options such as parcel lockers and vending machines. This is why it's so important that the Senate hears directly from communities about why staffed Post Offices matter.

While parcel lockers might work in some locations, they are not a replacement for the face to face services our Woodburn community relies on every day.

Our Post Office provides so much more than parcels. It gives our community access to personal and business banking, bill payments, passport services and the friendly, local service that only a staffed Post Office can provide.

With no bank in Woodburn, many residents and businesses depend on these services. For some people, travelling to another town simply isn't practical.

The Senate is asking for submissions, and they want to hear why face to face Post Office services matter to you, your family or your business.

Whether it's banking your takings, paying your bills, posting important documents, collecting parcels, or simply having someone there to help when you need it, your story matters.

✉️ Your submission doesn't need to be long. A few paragraphs explaining how you use the Woodburn Post Office and why a staffed service is important is enough.

📅 Submissions close Friday 7 August 2026

Please take five minutes to have your say and then share this post with your family, friends and neighbours.

A parcel locker can collect a parcel. A community Post Office supports an entire town. Let's make sure the Senate hears why Woodburn's face to face services matter.

FLOOD MITIGATION COMMUNITY CONSULTATIONS.
Four years after the 2022 flood disaster, the long awaited CSIRO report has been released. The report provided flood mitigation recommendations that could significantly reduce future flood impacts across our region. The report models solutions including dry holding ponds and opening Boundary Creek to the ocean and estimates the 2022 flood would have been 2 metres lower in Lismore if the measures had been in place.

Community consultation sessions are being held across the Northern Rivers for any input or questions you may have.

An Update from Woodburn Action Group.

WAG is a volunteer group made up of local residents with experience in education, business, health, engineering, construction and farming. We work alongside the Woodburn Business and Community Chamber to advocate for practical long-term outcomes that support the future of our community.

WAG recently met with representatives from the NSW Reconstruction Authority (RA) and Richmond Valley Council (RVC) to discuss the future of Woodburn following the Resilient Homes Program.

The meeting provided an opportunity to work collaboratively on solutions that will help our town remain strong and sustainable.
Our key priorities continue to be:
👉Supporting opportunities to maintain and grow Woodburn's population.
👉Protecting local businesses, essential services and community infrastructure.
👉Identifying future housing opportunities within the Woodburn postcode.
👉Exploring innovative and flood-resilient rebuilding options.
👉Ensuring our community has a strong voice in future planning.

A key discussion centred on the future of buyback properties. RA advised that planning is commencing to investigate future land uses across buyback sites. WAG strongly advocated for suitable properties to be carefully assessed before demolition, with consideration given to alternative housing outcomes, community uses and opportunities that support Woodburn's future.

The meeting also explored opportunities for future housing and recognised the need to identify suitable flood-free land for future growth. There was also positive discussion around the proposal for an Emergency Management Hub on flood-free land to strengthen Woodburn's disaster preparedness.

A number of positive actions came from the meeting.
👍 RVC has supported WAG's request for RA TO PAUSE DEMOLITION of suitable properties while further assessment is undertaken.
👍 RA also advised it is reviewing opportunities for some properties to be repurposed for transitional housing where appropriate.

While there is still much work ahead, WAG was encouraged by the willingness of both RA and RVC to work collaboratively with our community.
