National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) is a time to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to reflect on how we can contribute to reconciliation every day.

This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, “All In,” is a powerful call for everyone to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation and meaningful action.

At SASSI, reconciliation means more than acknowledgement, it is about ongoing listening, learning, partnership and action.

For us, reconciliation looks like:

- Creating culturally safe and welcoming spaces for Aboriginal women, children and families
- Walking alongside Aboriginal communities with respect, accountability and care
- Supporting Aboriginal-led voices, initiatives and community events
- Building strong relationships that support healing, equity and connection

We acknowledge the strength, resilience and leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and remain committed to being All In for reconciliation.

Happy Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈

Almost 50 years ago, a small group of community members in the Illawarra came together with a simple but powerful belief: that every woman and child deserves a safe place to call home.

That belief has never changed.

At SASSI, we know that for many LGBTQI+ people, safety is about more than just a roof over your head. It is about being seen, respected, believed, and supported without judgement. It is about knowing you don't have to hide who you are to access our support.

Since the Juno Refuge first opened its doors in Warilla in 1976, we have walked alongside women from nearly every background, identity, and lived experience. LGBTQI+ women have always been part of our community, We are proud to continue building services that are inclusive, affirming, and safe.

Our commitment is not just for Pride Month. It is part of what we do every day through trauma informed practice, inclusive language, culturally safe services, and a genuine commitment to ensuring there is no wrong door when someone reaches out for help.

To our LGBTQI+ community: you belong here, you are welcome here, and we stand with you. Always ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Today is LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Day, a day to recognise that domestic, family and intimate partner violence can happen across all genders, identities and relationships.

At SASSI, around 10% of people accessing our service identify as part of the LGBTQI community. We understand that fear of judgement, not being understood, or having relationships questioned can stop people from reaching out for support or sharing how they identify. Experiences of DFSV can be unique or more common within LGBTQI relationships because of stigma, discrimination, social isolation and fear around identity disclosure. It is important to remember that abuse is still about power and control, but the tactics used can look different.

We work hard to make sure inclusion is more than just a sticker on our doors. We want all women who identify as women, regardless of the gender of their partner, to know they are welcome here, believed, understood and kept safe.

If you or someone you know needs support, reach out at sassi.org.au or call us on (02) 4229 8523.

Today, on National Sorry Day, SASSI acknowledges the strength, resilience and survival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, particularly members of the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.

National Sorry Day is a time to reflect on the lasting impacts of past government policies that caused deep trauma, grief and disconnection for Aboriginal families and communities across Australia.

In 2008, former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd delivered a landmark apology in Parliament, acknowledging the injustices experienced by the Stolen Generations and the profound hurt caused to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

You can watch the apology here: https://www.nma.gov.au/defining-moments/resources/national-apology

At SASSI, we stand alongside our clients, staff and community members affected by intergenerational trauma and recognise there is still much work to be done to achieve healing, equity and justice.

In the Shoalhaven region, 37% of the women we support are from Aboriginal communities, a significant overrepresentation that reflects the ongoing impacts of intergenerational trauma.

We remain committed to providing culturally safe, trauma-informed support and continuing to listen, learn and walk alongside Aboriginal communities with respect and accountability.

SASSI is at the front line of the national housing affordability crisis and the numbers from our region tell a sobering story.

Each quarter, we're releasing a snapshot of how the region is tracking.

In the first three months of 2026, the demand for our services reflected what's happening across the country: housing costs, domestic violence, and cost-of-living pressures continuing to affect families across the region.

6 women lodged a new request for support with SASSI every single day for the first 90 days of this year. 70% of those requests came from women impacted by domestic violence.

In that same period, SASSI supported 622 new clients - providing housing and case management to help women and children rebuild their lives.

Behind every one of those numbers is a woman finding her footing again. If you'd like to be part of the response, visit sassi.org.au to donate, volunteer, or fundraise.
