MCCI Settlement Services

MCCI Settlement Services We support community members who have recently arrived in Australia to settle into their new life.

SCARF is a volunteer-driven community organisation that supports families and individuals from refugee backgrounds as they build new lives in the Illawarra. The support we provide is focused on helping to create connections and build wellbeing and a sense of belonging through social inclusion, education and employment support. Since 2005, SCARF has connected local volunteers with people from refug

ee backgrounds, providing community, friendship and practical assistance to more than 2,000 people. SCARF facilitates a range of targeted social inclusion, education and employment support programs – including befriending, education and tutoring, learner driver mentoring, youth leadership, social inclusion, employment readiness support, and diversity and inclusion activities – to help former refugees overcome barriers and build a secure, vibrant life in their new home. SCARF also provides cultural responsiveness training and cultural capacity building services to organisations wishing to build diverse and inclusive workplaces. In October 2021 SCARF joined forces with the Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra Ltd (MCCI) through an agreed merger in the community’s interest. SCARF will continue to serve the Illawarra’s refugee community and, together with MCCI, work towards creating connections and generating opportunities that build a sense of belonging; promote social and economic inclusion; and empower individuals and families to lead independent lives.

My name is Elizabeth. I was born in a refugee camp called Mae Surin and it was based in Thailand.

Elizabeth arrived in Australia at the age of 13 and has called Wollongong home ever since.

"When we got to Australia, the environment and the place were quite different... it took a long time for us to get familiar and feel comfortable living in a new place."

For Elizabeth, one of the biggest challenges was learning English.

"I'd never spoken English before coming here. I was a beginner learning English, speaking and writing as well."

One of the biggest supports for Elizabeth was programs like Homework Help and community organisations that helped her navigate school and life in a new country.

"We have our own culture and upbringing from our families and then the wider Australian culture. We can blend the two and work through what works for us."

Today, Elizabeth works as a community nurse at MCCI, supporting people from refugee backgrounds and giving back to the community that supported her.

"There are many things I'm proud of in my life. Becoming a nurse is one of them... and having connections with the community and just being able to contribute towards that."

Elizabeth's story is one of a million stories.

Since 1947, Australia has welcomed more than one million people through its humanitarian program, with every story contributing to the rich and diverse communities we share today.

"We live in two different worlds. We have our own culture and upbringing from our families, and then the wider Australian culture. We can blend the two and find what works for us."

For young people from refugee backgrounds, discovering their identity and belonging is a journey. It means holding onto culture, embracing new experiences, and discovering where you fit.

Elizabeth talks about her journey from a refugee camp on the Thailand–Myanmar border to building a life, career, and community connections here in the Illawarra. Today, she works at MCCI as a community nurse, supporting people in our community and helping them access the care they need.

Identity isn't about choosing one world or another; it's about bringing the best of both together.

Since 1947, Australia has welcomed more than one million refugees and displaced people, each bringing their own skills, experiences, cultures, and aspirations. Their stories continue to shape and strengthen our communities.

1 in every 70 people on Earth has been forced to flee their home.

This week, Year 11 students at Keira High School took part in the Refugee Challenge, an interactive experience that explores some of the difficult decisions and challenges faced by people seeking safety and rebuilding their lives in a new country.

Students also heard firsthand from Ola, Charlie, and Ku Mo, who shared their lived experiences of journeying to Australia. Charlie, coming from Togo in West Africa, spoke about arriving from a French-speaking background and the reality of starting again in a new language and education system. He reflected on the early challenges of communication, the persistence required to keep up with learning English in such a short time, and the determination it took to not only learn English, but to continue his studies and gradually build a new life in Australia, and Wollongong.

The Refugee Challenge is delivered by MCCI Multicultural Communities in partnership with City of Wollongong and Keira High School.

A special thank you to the Year 11 student facilitators for leading the activities so thoughtfully, and to Cr Tania Brown for stopping by to listen to the Q&A session and meet participants.

Digital skills can open doors to greater independence, confidence, and connection.

At the MCCI Multicultural Communities Tech Savvy program, participants from refugee backgrounds learn practical skills that help them navigate everyday life with greater confidence. Skills that we may take for granted like learning how to type and use computers to translating messages and communicating online, can transform people's lives making it easier to access information, stay connected, and manage daily tasks independently.

Since 1947, Australia has welcomed more than one million people through its humanitarian program, with every story contributing to the rich and diverse communities we share today.

As we mark the 40th year of Refugee Week, we celebrate the people, programs, and opportunities that help make belonging possible.

The theme for Refugee Week 2026 is ‘A Million Stories’. Wafaa’s story is one of them. Listen to Wafaa in conversation with Nick Rheinberger on ABC Illawarra as she reflects on her blessed childhood, growing up in a large extended family in the mountainous landscape of Al Zabadani, Syria, before fleeing to Lebanon and eventually arriving in Australia in 2014.

Today, Wafaa is in charge of MCCI’s Employment Program and is proud to call Wollongong home.
