A Father and son duo dived into the icy winter waters in the Royal National Park to remain flood-rescue ready ๐ŸŠ

Daniel Outten and his father Richard Outten took part in a demanding nighttime flood rescue exercise at Bonnie Vale, alongside 20 NSW SES members to hone their on-water flood rescue skills.

โ€œWhen I moved back to the Shire, I had the opportunity to go and volunteer with my dad. We both learn from each other based on the experiences we bring to the service and itโ€™s great to be able to share that with my old man.โ€ Daniel said.

These training exercises put volunteers through their paces to practise improvised launch and recovery, navigating in swift water, inflatable hose rescues and a two-point boat tether and recue from a raft in swift water.

Training together is a proud moment for Richard, who has watched Daniel embrace the role and develop his skills. Their shared commitment reflects the many families at the SES who volunteer side by side to support their community ๐Ÿ’ช

After walking into the NSW SES at 14 years old, 50 years later Mark Ryan is still putting on his oranges and helping his community! ๐Ÿงก

Throughout his service, Mr Ryan has answered countless calls for assistance, helping people through storms, floods, motor vehicle accidents and other emergencies.

Just this week, he was celebrated and recognised as a life member of the NSW SES in front of NSW SES Gilgandra Unit, where he has been a member for the past 22 years.

At 64 years of age, Mark still responds to rescue calls and attends the unit weekly for training.

Over the years, he has played a key role in responding to major disasters across Western NSW including the Nyngan floods, Dubbo flooding and major storms, Goobang bushfires and flooding in Warren, Walgett, Coonamble and other areas.

After five decades of service, Mark is now passionate about mentoring the next generation of volunteers by getting them out on the tools and explaining the basic principles to save someoneโ€™s life.

โ€œHe has created a lasting legacy throughout the region, inspiring others around him to step forward, build their skills and give their best.โ€ NSW SES Acting Assistant Commissioner Brigid Rice said.

Congratulations to Mark on an incredible achievement - he has given so much to the people of NSW and has shown true dedication and selflessness in his efforts ๐Ÿ‘

โ€œI was so outraged, I wanted to find a way to help women in this situation. They had all paid someone to clear their gutters, but it appeared they had not been cleaned to a standard.โ€

After a stormy weekend of calls from women who had been let down by people they had paid for basic household maintenance, NSW SES Warringah / Pittwater Unit volunteer Jenny Parkes founded the โ€˜Women Helping Womenโ€™ workshops to teach local women practical skills to stay safe during severe weather.

Before joining NSW SES in 2018, she had never used power tools or climbed onto a roof. After losing her husband and becoming a sole parent to two children, she recognised that many women parenting alone would face the same challenges and uncertainty she once did.

Today, she is passionate about helping women feel more confident, capable and prepared in an emergency ๐Ÿงก

The โ€˜Women Helping Womenโ€™ workshop returned Warringah Pittwater Unit yesterday for the 5th time, with a record attendance of more than 60 local women.

Some of the practical skills taught included using silicone for waterproofing, operating a drill, safely using a ladder, building a sandbag wall and understanding the dangers of floodwaters.

Thank you to Jenny and the crew for giving their time to help their community feel ready should they need to take charge of emergency responses at home ๐Ÿ‘

In October 2026, the Australian Government is launching AusAlert, a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.

Itโ€™s a fast and reliable way to help communities like yours be informed and better prepared during local and national emergencies.

Itโ€™s just one of the many ways the Australian Government and state and territory emergency services organisations are helping to keep Australians safer.

The first local test will occur in Liverpool at 4pm on Wednesday 17 June 2026.
