Health & Safety Advisory – Flood-Affected Areas
Soil disturbed by receding or active floodwaters poses a significant risk of contamination with serious diseases, including melioidosis and leptospirosis (among others).
These organisms can become airborne when soil or debris is disturbed, increasing the risk of inhalation.
Protective measures are strongly recommended:
Wear an N95/P2 respirator when working in flood-affected areas. While uncomfortable in humid conditions, this provides important protection for the lungs.
Note: Surgical masks do not protect against aerosolised particles.
Cover all wounds, cuts, or abrasions with an occlusive waterproof dressing to prevent infection.
Wash hands and forearms frequently with soap and water where available.
Expect increased mosquito activity, which may transmit diseases such as Ross River virus and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV).
Use DEET-based insect repellent and reapply regularly as directed.
Taking these precautions will significantly reduce the risk of infection while working in flood-impacted environments.

Heavy rain and flooding continues to impact large parts of northern Queensland. Emergency services remind those in affected areas to:

πŸš— Drive to the conditions and NEVER drive through flood water
πŸ’§ Stay away from flooded creeks and waterways
🚨 Follow the advice of emergency services
🌧️ Stay up to date with warnings for your area
☎️ Always call Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.

Follow the Bureau of Meteorology for important updates.
