A Proud Moment for Marine Rescue Windy Harbour!

Last night, we were honoured to receive a Commendation in the 2026 Australian Search and Rescue Awards, alongside our fellow volunteers from Augusta Marine Rescue.

The recognition was for a challenging rescue operation on 12 October 2025, when our two crews worked together in severe weather to assist a lone fisherman experiencing a serious medical episode. With further engine problems leaving his vessel disabled, both crews combined their skills and worked tirelessly to tow him safely back to shore for medical care.

This rescue was a true example of teamwork, seamanship and the dedication of our volunteers, who put themselves out there in difficult conditions to help others.

We are extremely proud to share this recognition with Augusta Marine Rescue and would like to thank all the volunteers involved in this operation. It was a great example of two Marine Rescue groups working together with one goal — bringing someone home safely.

Congratulations to everyone involved, thank you to the DFES Marine Services team and Water Police for their support and the important work they do alongside our volunteers. and sincere thank you to the NATSAR Council for this recognition of our volunteers and the work we do.

It has been a busy and rewarding few days for the volunteers at Marine Rescue Windy Harbour.

On Saturday, our volunteers took part in a Seamanship Training Course delivered by Danial Pell from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. With calm seas and beautiful weather, the training provided a great opportunity for volunteers to build on their skills both in the classroom and out on the water aboard our rescue vessel.

Today, we welcomed students from Pemberton as part of Emergency Services Week. Throughout the day, students learned about marine safety, boating awareness, and the role Marine Rescue plays in keeping our coastal waters safe.

One of the highlights was a mock shark attack scenario, where Marine Rescue volunteers worked alongside St John Ambulance Northcliffe to demonstrate how emergency services respond and work together during an incident.

These events are a great reminder that training, education, and teamwork are at the heart of what we do. Whether it’s preparing our volunteers for real-life situations or helping young people learn about water safety, we are proud to be part of a community that values safety and service.

A big thank you to Danial Pell, St John Ambulance Northcliffe, the teachers and students who visited, everyone involved in the program and our dedicated volunteers who helped make both days such a success.

The St John First Aid Course took place today at the Manjimup St John Sub Centre, with the majority of Marine Rescue Windy Harbour volunteers participating. We appreciate the efforts of Kiara, the course trainer, and the support provided by the Manjimup St John sub centre facilities, Department of Fire Emergency Services and Marine Rescue Walpole for their assistance with radio communications and standby support.

Our heart breaks for the Marine Rescue NSW- Marine Rescue Ballina, the families, their loved ones and crew members of the two volunteers who tragically lost their lives.

This is a heartbreaking reminder of the courage and sacrifice shown by marine rescue volunteers who answer the call to help others, often in dangerous and unpredictable conditions. These two courageous crew members will be sorely missed.

“May the sea be calm and the winds gentle, and may you rest where the horizon meets the sky.”

From Marine Rescue Windy Harbour , we send our deepest condolences and support to the entire Marine Rescue NSW and family but also to the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.
