One of our members is currently overseas in Bruges, and has taken some amazing photos of the town highlighting its heritage.

The first photo depicts two houses, the house on the right was built in the 1500s and the house on the left was built in the same style in 2019.

Moreover, the second photo depicts the new lamp posts that they are still installing all around. There are also coach lamps on sconces to match the style of the originals from the 17/1800s!

The Importance of Windsor's Gas Lamps

Did you know that the gas lamps in Windsor Mall are not just a charming aesthetic feature but also a greener, more cost-effective choice for our town?

As architect Carl Elefante famously said, "The most sustainable structure is the one that’s already built." This principle applies perfectly to our beloved gas lamps. Moving and converting these lamps would result in a considerably greater carbon footprint than simply maintaining them. Converting to electricity is a costly process that requires coal-powered fuel, which has a significant environmental impact. Additionally, in Australia, gas is now used to generate electricity because it emits half the emissions of coal, according to the Department of Climate Change.

Interestingly, towns with extensive gas lamp systems, such as Berlin, have discovered that electric lamps create more waste than gas lamps. Electric lamps need component replacements two to three times more often and the ash from their 40,000 incandescent gas mantles (compared with our 25!) amounts to a minimal 2-3kg of waste per year.

Moreover, during a summer night, one electric light kills roughly 250 insects, while gas lamps are harmless to wildlife.

Our gas lamps are not just functional but also hold cultural significance. They are unique to Windsor, much like gondolas are to Venice and red buses to London. In a town where the flames of history still flicker, it is vital to preserve these historical features.

Recently, there have been campaigns to move, convert, or even remove the gas lamps and the mall itself to make way for a road. These opinions are becoming more vocal with the upcoming election. Despite council resolutions to preserve the gas lamps, this debate continues.

Shop owners and tourists who visit our town weekly by train agree with us on the importance of maintaining the gas lamps. The recent Gaslamp Festival showcased their popularity and provided much-needed support for small businesses during a challenging, flood-ravaged time.

If you agree with preserving Windsor’s gas lamps, you can support this cause by joining our group or attending our meetings. Existing members are reminded to pay their $5 membership fee for this year, as we have just had our AGM. Your support helps local small businesses and enhances local property values—a worthwhile investment for our community.

Let’s keep the mall, keep the lamps, and keep the markets thriving in Windsor!

On Saturday 8th June, Kings Lone Weekend, Windsor Celebrated the Inaugural Gaslamp Festival. Windsor has a long history with Gaslamps and after 187 years the community came together to celebrate that history. Despite flooding on the Hawkesbury River, the weather was perfect, the community happy and a great celebration was had. Everyone got in the spirit of the event with many people dressing up in period costume. Unfortunately the floods did impact the event and several groups cancelled and didn't participate. We look forward to them being able to attend next years event. Thank you to all the sponsors, volunteers and supporters of this great event. Seeing the Hawkesbury celebrate and enjoy the event post past 4 years was fantastic to see. If you see yourself, family member of friend in a photo tag them, let them know you saw them. Tag your business too if you were there.
