Stepping into the spring activity program, 2 leaders and a Venturer from 1st Willoughby joined the Sydney North Region Rockcraft team for a caving weekend at Bungonia National Park.
Led by our expert region guides, we explored numerous caves over the weekend, marvelling at the hidden world that extends deep underground into the limestone.
Quickly coming to terms with some technical caving terminology -- such as “You want me to go through where?” and “Don’t eat the bat guano” -- the teams climbed, crawled, squirmed, scrambled, and rapelled through many classic formations that have been hewn out of the rock over the millennia. Navigating several aptly named highlights -- such as the “Hairy Traverse”, “Kidney Squeeze”, and “Dragons Teeth” -- participants gained new appreciation for the dimensions of the human body, gravity, and the unforgiving nature of solid rock.
After an exhilarating weekend of comradery, teamwork, and adventure, the teams headed back to Sydney battered and bruised, yet victorious after another great weekend caving. Thank you to all the guides for a super weekend!
Caving trips are run twice per year by the Sydney North Region Rockcraft Team, and are open to Venturers and leaders who have completed their abseiling qualifications.
