Our biggest haul of plastic polllution. Ever.
At the end of April we commenced our first remote clean-up campaign of the year, travelling to Mapoon in Northern Australia.
In a single day on Flinders Beach, our crew and the Mapoon Land and Sea Rangers removed nearly 3 tonnes of plastic from just 800 metres of coastline - the most ever cleared in one day on any of our remote clean-ups.
By the end of the week a staggering 12 tonnes had been cleared with an estimated total of 293,929 individual pieces removed, all by hand.
This is a place of deep cultural significance to the Tjungundji people, and a vital turtle nesting ground.
But plastic debris obstructs nesting sites, ghost nets can entangle turtles, and hatchlings must navigate piles of plastic just to reach the ocean. By clearing the beach before nesting season, the team gave marine turtles a meaningfully better chance of survival.
This was our fourth year working with the Mapoon Land and Sea Rangers and it was a true collaboration of passionate people working together, determined to restore this beautiful beach to the pristine state it should be and to make it safer for the turtles who nest here.
We thank the Mapoon Land and Sea Rangers for welcoming us back to Country, and to LUSH handmade cosmetics whose support made this clean-up possible.
