Marine Rescue Ulverstone Volunteer Marine Rescue Ulverstone - Volunteers helping keep the boating community safe on the water

We provide safety services across the state with our main patrol area between Port Sorell and Emu River while being based in Ulverstone. We travel to other areas to provide specialised safety coverage and operations as required. We meet of a Sunday to train and patrol the leven river and surrounding beaches and at other times if we feel it is necessary. Timely reminder about our large friends migrating through our North West Coast waters at the moment.

Approach distances for vessels

 
In a vessel, approach no closer than 100m to a whale or 50m to a dolphin;

If your vessel is under steam you should approach no closer than 300m for whales or 150m for dolphins - no more than three vessels within the caution zone (see diagram);

Withdraw immediately, at a slow and steady pace, if the animals show any kind of disturbance;

Adopt a slow speed (no wake) while in the area;

Avoid approaching from the no-approach zones in front or behind the animal (see diagram);

Personal motorised watercraft (including jet skis and remotely operated craft) should not approach whales or dolphins any closer than 300m.

If whales or dolphins move within this distance, the vessel should slow down and move away from the animal(s) at no-wake speed to at least 300m away.

Please remember - keep a safe distance, remain quiet, and do not try to touch or feed.

Approach distances for aircraft

Aircraft may disturb whales and dolphins due to their speed, noise, shadow, or downdraft in the case of helicopters. The following should be followed to minimise disturbance:

Helicopters should not fly lower than 500m, within a 500m radius around a whale or dolphin (see diagram);

Other aircraft should not fly lower than 300m, within a 300m radius around a whale or dolphin (see diagram).

About volunteer roles

It takes a big effort to coordinate Marine Rescue Ulverstone's network and our support teams are as important as our frontline responders, coordinating the training, management, maintenance, and administrative tasks that ensure we are always rescue ready.

If you already have some boating or emergency service knowledge, that’s great. If not, our professional training courses are specifically designed to give you the skills and qualifications you’ll need.

This may include first aid, sea survival, a marine radio operator’s certificate of proficiency and, on completion of the relevant training and sea time requirements, a Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal AMSA (AMPA) certificate of competency.

VMR Ulverstone guarantees full coverage of operational costs, ensuring our members can focus on their crucial roles and spend more time engaging with the community.

Boat crew

If you are fit, confident in a range of onboard conditions, can work as part of a team, and thrive during gruelling situations - you could be a perfect crew member. You’ll help to perform water rescues or operations in an emergency and remain effective in high-stress situations, performing vital work in marine search and rescue operations.

General member

A general member role might sound ‘general’ but everyone plays a vital role in a unit’s success. General members support the operational unit with public administrative, educational and community focused event activities. There are also opportunities to learn skills in other areas to support the boating community across Tasmanians coastline and waterways.

We are open Sundays 9am till late and are located at 2 Flora Street West Ulverstone adjacent to the main boat ramp.

Afternoon all, due to extensive flooding in our Marine Rescue building here in Ulverstone over the last 2 days, our Commander has made a decision to close the base until further notice until this weather pattern resides.

With water on the concrete floor and height of water around electrical items there has been some safety concerns raised and can't be fixed easily.

Our crews will remain active to respond to incidents that occur.

All our thoughts are with Marine Rescue in Ballina this morning after two of their own were tragically killed last night whilst trying to reach a stricken yacht.
