Conservation Council of WA

Conservation Council of WA The Conservation Council of WA is Western Australia's peak non-profit, non-government environmental organisation.

Together with our members, we're the state's leading voice for nature and climate action. The Conservation Council of WA is the state’s foremost non-profit, non-government conservation organisation. CCWA has been an outspoken advocate for conservation and a sustainable Western Australia for fifty years, working directly with the government, media, industry, community groups, and political parties

to promote a more sustainable WA and to protect our natural environment. Through advocacy, community engagement, policy development, science, and on-the-ground projects, we help create a sustainable future that all Western Australians can look forward to. As WA’s peak environmental group we represent more than one hundred member groups throughout the state, as well as tens of thousands of individuals. We connect with and amplify the voice of this growing network, which covers diverse aims and interests - from promoting renewable energy to the protection of native bushland and wildlife. CCWA works to promote a clean economy that provides opportunities without polluting the ecosystems that support us, or destroying the culture and beauty that inspires us. We work to protect our wild places and ensure that unique wildlife can thrive in their natural habitat. CCWA works with communities and individuals to build skills, empower groups, and strengthen voices at a local level. We also combine the strength of our network to tackle critical environmental challenges at a much larger scale. From the rugged far north of the Kimberley, to the green forested South West, to our amazing coastline and unique marine life, CCWA speaks for the protection and conservation of all nature in WA. Whether protecting icons such as Ningaloo Reef, creating new National Parks and Marine Sanctuaries, or saving old growth forests, our work leaves an enduring legacy for future generations.

Woodside wants permission to drill up to 57 wells near an ancient WA reef system — all so it can export more royalty-free gas. 🌊

Scott Reef off the Kimberley coast is habitat for protected species including the humpback whale, pygmy blue whale and green sea turtle. 🐋 🐢

The movement to Save Scott Reef from Woodside is growing.

Over recent weeks, CCWA has supported screenings of the documentary Corals' Last Stand in Maylands, Warwick, Leederville and Thornlie.

The film — starring John Butler, Tim Winton and Brinkley Davies — shows just how precious Scott Reef is, and how its under threat of industrialisation.

Thousand of people have now watched Corals' Last Stand — and we want to bring it to thousands more.

Watch Corals' Last Stand at home today, or host your own screening: www.coralslaststand.com.au

ICYMI: There are now just 2 days left to provide feedback to the WA Environment Minister on the proposed changes to the legal exemption order that allows Alcoa to continue mining while its operations are under EPA assessment. This includes activity within drinking water Reservoir Protection Zones and areas close to habitat for threatened black cockatoos.

The WA Environment Minister has announced that Alcoa’s current exemption order will be revoked and replaced with an updated order.

Several suspected breaches of the exemption order were reported in recent months where Alcoa has mined close to significant trees that could provide critical habitat for threatened black cockatoos. Buffers required under the current exemption are well under what is advised by scientists and government departments.

The public has until Wednesday 17 June 2026 to provide feedback to the Environment Minister on the proposed changes.

Voice your opinion about the decision and ensure the flaws in the current exemption order are NOT reinstated.

There are just 4 days left to provide feedback to the WA Environment Minister on the proposed changes to Alcoa's mining exemption order!

Congratulations to our Vice President Giz Watson, who was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) on 8 June 2026 for her service to the environment and to the Parliament of Western Australia.

Decade after decade, Giz commits her time, energy, and skills to serving her community and protecting WA's unique natural environment.

Giz served as a Member of the WA Legislative Council from 1997-2013, and is currently Secretary of the WA Forest Alliance, Member of the Teaching Panel for Women's Environmental Leadership Australia, and our Vice President here at the Conservation Council of WA.

As a Member of Parliament, Giz held numerous portfolios including biodiversity, urban bushland, marine issues, forests and woodlands, waste management, and agriculture. She also drafted, introduced, and debated bills on biodiversity protection, protecting Margaret River from coal mining, cat management, and making WA nuclear free.

We're delighted that Giz's contributions have been recognised with her inclusion on the King's Birthday 2026 Honours List. Congratulations again!

We all deserve clean and affordable energy that supports climate, nature, and communities, and polling shows that 73% of Western Australians support a Renewable Energy Target.

For too long, gas export corporations have ripped us off, hurting people and planet for profit. Renewable energy is our opportunity to rewrite the rules and make our energy grid work for us.

Will you email your MP now, calling on them to commit to clean, affordable energy that supports the people and places we love? Link in comments

The good people of Maylands gathered last night to judge: Does Big Gas pass the Pub Test?

The answer was a resounding ‘No’.

After all, consider the facts:

🚨Ninety percent of the gas produced in Western Australia is exported, and yet the gas lobby is manufacturing a fake gas shortage.
🚨The Japanese government raises more revenue from taxing Australian gas than the Australian government does.
🚨Scott Reef, where Woodside plans to drill for gas, is habitat for at least 27 protected species, including the pygmy blue whale and green sea turtle.
🚨Gas expansion risks slowing down the global energy transition and causing disastrous consequences for the climate. More gas will displace renewables, not coal.

The event at Seasonal Brewing Co. also served as the launch for a new beer from independent brewer Evil Mega Corporation, the Dirty Gas Guzzler, with all profits going towards CCWA’s campaigns against gas expansion.

Thanks to everyone who came along, as well as our panelists:
- CCWA Fossil Fuels Program Manager and resident quiz master Gerard Mazza
- Freo Dockers fan and Get Off My Chest! campaigner Clare Lagan
- Energy analyst and researcher Piers Verstegen
- CCWA campaigner and organiser Victoria Pavy
- Evil Mega Corporation brewer Rhys Lopez

Thanks also to DJ Rok Riley for the great soundtrack!

Member for Maylands Dan Bull and Member for Perth Patrick Gorman MP should take note - voters in their electorate are wise to the great gas rip off.

Did you see our joint ad in yesterday's West Australian? 👀

While 73% of West Australians support a Renewable Energy Target, the WA Government is yet to set one.

If they do, we'll get cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable power through energy that's made here in WA.
