Today’s the day!

Our wonderful Legacy volunteers and members of the Armed Forces are on the streets for our Legacy Week Street Appeal.

If you’re heading through the Perth CBD, keep an eye out for us around Forrest Chase, Hay Street Mall and surrounding areas — or come and find our team at Rockingham Foreshore.

And a couple of larger-than-life furry volunteers who may be difficult to miss!

Tomorrow, we take to the streets.

Our Legacy volunteers will be joined by members of the Armed Forces across the Perth CBD and Rockingham Foreshore tomorrow, Thursday 3 September, for our Legacy Week Street Appeal.

Why?
Because no veteran family should have to navigate life after service alone.

Legacy provides practical, long-term support including financial assistance, advocacy, education and social connection — standing alongside veteran families through bereavement, adversity and change.

WARNING: Bears will be loose in Perth and Rockingham this Thursday.

Some will be small, cuddly and looking for a new home.

A couple may be considerably bigger, slightly less well behaved, and prone to prancing about in public.

It’s all part of our Legacy Week Street Appeal this Thursday 3 September, when Legacy volunteers and members of our Armed Forces will be collecting donations and selling our much-loved Legacy bears and badges.

But behind every bear is an important purpose.

A Legacy bear is more than a keepsake. It’s support for a veteran family who needs it.

So if you’re in the Perth CBD or at Rockingham Foreshore this Thursday, keep an eye out for us.
And possibly… a very large bear.

This Legacy Week, stand with our veterans’ families.

For more than 100 years, Legacy has stood beside the families of Australian veterans, providing stability, opportunity and care when it is needed most.

Today, Legacy supports around 25,000 partners and children of veterans who have died or given their health as a result of their service.

Our support is ongoing and practical — from financial assistance and advocacy to education, social connection and support through bereavement. Because no veteran family should have to navigate life after service alone.

This Legacy Week, you can help us continue that promise.

Legacy Week starts today.

Since the 1940s, Legacy Week has reminded Australians of a promise that continues long after military service ends: to care for the families of those who have served our country.

Legacy supports around 25,000 partners and children of veterans who have died or given their health as a result of their service.

This year, that promise extends even further, following the most significant expansion of eligibility in Legacy’s 100-year history — opening the door to thousands more veteran families.

This Thursday, our volunteers and members of the Armed Forces will take that message to the streets of Perth and Rockingham.

When you see us, buy a badge, take home a bear or make a donation.
It’s a small act that can make a very real difference to a veteran family.

Something very special is coming to the streets next Thursday…

On Thursday 3 September, our Legacy volunteers will be out and about across the Perth CBD and Rockingham Foreshore for our Legacy Week Street Appeal.

And we won’t be alone!

Members of our Armed Forces will be lending a hand, our much-loved Legacy bears will be looking for new homes, and you may even spot a couple of rather larger bears prancing around town.

Every badge, every bear and every donation helps Legacy support the families of Australian veterans.

Yesterday, we were pleased to welcome Annabelle Wilson, Commissioner for Veteran Families at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, to Legacy WA.

Annabelle brings a particularly valuable perspective to her role. As a beneficiary of Legacy and former CEO of Legacy Melbourne, she has both lived and professional experience of the important role support can play in the lives of veteran families.

During her visit, Annabelle met with our Community Services team and staff with lived experience to hear about the challenges they are seeing across WA’s Defence and veteran family community, and to discuss the needs of families here in the West.

She also rolled up her sleeves and helped us prepare lanyards and collection tins for our Legacy Week Street Appeal on Thursday 3 September, when our volunteers will be out across the Perth CBD and Rockingham Foreshore raising funds to support veterans’ families.

Thank you, Annabelle, for taking the time to listen, share and lend a hand. We greatly appreciated the visit.

We were thrilled to welcome Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Matt Keogh to our office today! 🤝

Minister Keogh joined the Legacy WA team to announce $200,000 in funding for our new initiative, Legacy Connect, and to chat with us about the lasting impact this program will have on Western Australian veteran families.

Aligned with the Defence and Veteran Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2025–2030, Legacy Connect provides an integrated wellbeing model focused on prevention and early intervention through three key streams:

🚣 Activity-Based Support: Building on our Junior Legacy Connect program with family-friendly activities, from yoga and cooking to abseiling and family camps, to foster peer connection and healthy routines.

💻 Digital Hub: A low-barrier, culturally safe online space with evidence-based wellbeing resources, easy registrations, and service signposting.

🤝 Peer Support & SafeTALK: Trained Family Peer Navigators delivering suicide-alertness workshops across metro and regional WA to strengthen community capacity.

Veterans’ families will have enhanced knowledge and confidence to navigate wellbeing challenges, with timely access to support and reduced barriers to help-seeking.

Yesterday, Legacy WA Board Chair, The Hon. Linda Reynolds CSC, attended the 73rd Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement Commemorative Service at the Korean War Memorial in Kings Park.

Joined by His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson AC APM, Governor of Western Australia, RSLWA State President Duncan Anderson, veterans and members of the community, the ceremony honoured those who served during the Korean War, commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong, and included the laying of wreaths in remembrance.

Legacy WA continues to support the families of Korean War veterans, with an estimated 78 war widows and one adult beneficiary with disability currently receiving our services.

Last year, Gurkha veteran Kiran Gurung achieved an extraordinary feat, covering 119.6 km in 24 hours while wearing an S10 respirator, military boots and carrying his khukuri.

This year, he's taking on an even bigger challenge.

On 5–6 September, Kiran will attempt to complete 110 miles (177 km) in 24 hours at the final Light Horse Ultra, commemorating 110 years since ANZAC Day was first observed in Australia, New Zealand and England, and by troops in Egypt.

More than an incredible test of endurance, Kiran's challenge is about supporting veteran families. Every dollar raised will help Legacy WA continue providing vital support, services and opportunities for the families of veterans across Western Australia.

Please join us in supporting Kiran as he takes on this remarkable challenge and help make a meaningful difference for veteran families.
