Can a Saturday morning of preaching training make an impression that lasts beyond the day itself?

Richard Gibson reflects on a CBP seminar at Brisbane School of Theology that prompted conversation and serious reflection on interpretation, application and Christ-centred preaching.

If your preaching team could learn together, what would you want to work on?

REMEMBER THE GRACE

Over the next four Mondays, Mike will share four reminders to help us keep our preaching fresh.

We begin by remembering the grace.

Never lose the sense of what a privilege it is to preach God’s word. That we have been appointed to such a task is both an awesome responsibility and an extraordinary privilege.

Before preparing your next sermon, pause and remember what you have been entrusted to do. Familiarity can make preaching feel ordinary, but it never is.

What helps you recover that sense of privilege when preaching begins to feel routine?

Getting a Bible passage right is essential. Helping people hear and understand it matters too.

Dr Marty Foord’s testimony gets to the heart of why CBP runs preaching workshops: preachers can keep growing in both their understanding of the text and how they communicate it.

Which part of communicating a sermon would you most like to strengthen?

We need to work hard on understanding the text. But a sermon isn’t just written; it’s spoken.

It’s true that God can work through the dullest delivery, but that’s not a sound principle to work on, any more than saying, “God can use my words whether or not I properly prepare.”

Both a well-prepared sermon and a well-delivered sermon will usually result in a sermon that makes an impact.

Does your church have a preaching team or a group of lay preachers who would benefit from focused training?

CBP’s workshops equip groups of preachers with the skills and knowledge they need to teach God’s Word faithfully and effectively.

Every workshop is tailored to your church’s context and needs. Training can be delivered in person or online, for a team of five or a group of 100—and can run for anything from a couple of hours to an entire weekend.

Learning together also gives your preachers the opportunity to reflect, practise and grow in a constructive and mutually supportive environment.

A glimpse behind the ministry at CBP.

Recently, Mike had the privilege of preaching at Shellharbour City Anglican Church’s camp.

Church camps provide a valuable opportunity to step away from the usual rhythms of life, spend extended time in God’s Word and grow together as a church family. It was a joy for Mike to serve the church through preaching and conversations across the weekend.

We’re grateful to Shellharbour City Anglican Church for the invitation and warm welcome.

Please pray that the teaching from the weekend will continue to bear fruit in the life of the church.

To improve, you need to keep preaching. But along with that, you need to receive wise, discerning feedback. Otherwise, you practice making the same mistakes.

Better sermon preparation isn’t only about working longer. It’s about knowing where to focus.

“CBP has taught me what to focus on when preparing a sermon and what not to waste time on. This has made me much more effective in preparing my sermons. It has also taught me how to craft real-life, powerful and culturally relevant applications for my church.”

— Ivan Low, Pastor, Kingsway Methodist Church

Learning to preach is like learning to drive a car: you learn by doing it. Or learning to swim. You have to get in the water. And the more you drive or swim, the more confident and skilled you should become.

You don’t lower your golf handicap by playing less golf, and you don’t grow as a preacher by delivering fewer sermons.

A good preaching mentor doesn’t simply tell you what to say. They help you find your own voice and use it more effectively.

“I’m really grateful for the way that Mike has helped me to find my own voice as a preacher, and to step into that voice more effectively. Mike’s mentoring has helped me to preach the gospel not only by proclaiming the truth, but by doing so in a way that attempts to engage the hearts and the affections of my hearers.”

— Stephanie Judd, Senior Associate Minister, City on a Hill Melbourne
