We are celebrating Professor Nick Gottardo today. As Clinical Director of the WA Comprehensive Kids Cancer Centre at PCH, Professor Gottardo is changing what is possible for children with cancer, leading the AIM-BRAIN project that has transformed how brain tumours are diagnosed and treated across Australia and New Zealand.

He has been recognised as a finalist for Western Australian of the Year 2026, and it is thoroughly deserved.
At Back on Track, we walk alongside many of the families Professor Gottardo's team fights so hard for. We see firsthand what it means when a child gets more time, better treatment, and a real chance at life beyond hospital. His work makes our work possible.

Western Australian of the year 2026: Professor Nick Gottardo nominated for changing child cancer treatment.

Congratulations, Professor Gottardo. WA is lucky to have you.

Professor Nick Gottardo is changing the way cancer is treated in children, and has been recognised with a West Australian of the year nomination for it.

Last night, Back on Track Foundation was proud to attend the launch of the WA Comprehensive Kids Cancer Centre at Perth Children’s Hospital.

As an organisation working directly with children and families after treatment, it was encouraging to see such a strong focus on survivorship, collaboration, and long-term outcomes for children impacted by cancer.

We were especially pleased to stand alongside Professor Nick Gottardo and Professor Joost Lesterhuis, whose leadership continues to strengthen the future of paediatric cancer care and survivorship in Western Australia. Partnerships between healthcare, research, and community organisations are critical, because recovery extends far beyond medical treatment alone.

Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this important initiative to life. We look forward to continuing to work alongside the broader childhood cancer community to support children not only to survive, but to thrive beyond treatment.

Today, we pause to remember the Australians and New Zealanders who have served, and those who continue to serve.

ANZAC Day is about courage, sacrifice, and the quiet commitment to something bigger than yourself.

At Back on Track, that sense of service runs through everything we do.

Both our CEO and Founder, Kylie Dalton, and our Chair, Damian Burton, have served in the Australian Army, and continue that commitment through their work supporting children and families navigating life after serious illness.

Lest we forget. 🌺

Surviving cancer is not the end of the story for children and families. We see every day how the long tail of treatment impacts education, well-being, and life outcomes. This is why survivorship must be treated as a national priority, not an afterthought. Grateful to be part of the Children’s Cancer CoLab and to see this conversation being elevated.
