What a fantastic celebration of Refugee Week in Wyndham today! Our Poetry Competition was a highlight of the day, showcasing powerful and moving voices from across our community. A huge congratulations to all participants and especially to our winners whose words captured this year’s theme: A Million Stories. We were also privileged to hear from two incredible young women who inspired us with the incredible work they are doing in the areas of creativity and sport. And, we celebrated 20 years of the WHN. A sincere thank you to the Events Working Group for their hard work in bringing today’s event together so meaningfully. Congratulations to our winners, and thank you to everyone who came and made today a memorable celebration of community and connection.

At the start of Refugee week 2026 we can reflect on the impact it has had to our society to welcome 1 million refugees to our shores. 1 million people that made Australia their home, that worked long hours to rebuild their lives, and contributed with their taxes to create a community that cares for one another. We should feel proud of our diversity, knowing that we thrive when we respect and understand each other, when we can all celebrate together the successes of former refugees like Nestory Irankunda scoring a goal in the soccer world cup proudly wearing the green and gold.

Kindness and empathy builds a stronger community, 1 million refugees, 1 million stories of resilience, strength and survival

Please join us this Wednesday to celebrate Refugee Week - 1 million stories of courage, resilience and hope.
