🌕 Our final English Corner session for the term turned into a beautiful Mid-Autumn tea gathering! 🥮🍵

Instead of our usual English lesson, we invited our volunteer teachers and learners to come together, enjoy some food and tea, and celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival a little early. ❤️

🍵 Green tea, jasmine tea and Pu’er tea
🥮 Cantonese-style and Suzhou-style mooncakes
🥟 Homemade snacks brought by our learners
🌕 Sharing Mid-Autumn traditions and stories from home
🍵 And a little introduction to Chinese tea culture — tasting different teas and enjoying their aromas and flavours.

Over the term, we’ve seen everyone grow from learning new words and practising simple sentences to becoming more confident and comfortable having conversations in English.

And behind every little bit of progress has been the patience, encouragement and support of our wonderful volunteer teachers. ❤️

A cup of tea, a piece of mooncake, a table full of homemade treats, lots of laughter — and one big group photo to finish the term! 📸

Saving Energy, Saving Money!

This week, we were excited to welcome Climate Action Burwood-Canada Bay to our English Corner for a professional and practical session on energy saving and reducing emissions. 🌱

In just one hour, we discovered that there is much more to saving energy than simply “turning off the lights”! 💡

We learned:

🌱 Why does energy efficiency matter?
⚡ What are clean energy sources?
👹 What are the hidden “energy monsters” in our homes — and which appliances use the most electricity?
💰 What simple changes in our daily habits can make a real difference to our energy bills?
🏠 How do homes naturally heat up in summer and cool down in winter — and how can we work with these principles to stay comfortable?

So many everyday things we thought we understood were turned upside down in just one hour! 😲

A huge thank you to Ken and Robin from CABCB for joining us and sharing such valuable knowledge and practical tips with our community. 🌱❤️

We really appreciate your time, expertise and enthusiasm, and look forward to learning more together at our next session!

🇦🇺 Once you reach a certain age in Australia, you may be eligible for more benefits than you realise! How many do you know?

This week at SOPMCA English Corner, we explored some of the government benefits and services available to senior Australians 👇

🚌 Affordable public transport
Eligible seniors can access public transport for as little as $2.50 a day.

🏠 Support at home
Depending on your circumstances, government-funded services may help with cooking, housework, transport and getting out to social activities.

👨‍👩‍👧 Support for carers
If you care for an older person or a child at home, you may also be eligible for government support.

💳 Different cards, different benefits
There isn’t just one “senior card”. Different cards, ages and circumstances can provide access to different discounts, concessions and support.

Our learners not only discovered these useful benefits, but also practised practical English for making enquiries:

✈️ This Week at SOPMCA English Corner: Travel & Holidays!

Our learners explored common travel and holiday vocabulary, useful phrases and practical travel tips — all designed to make travelling in English easier and more enjoyable.

🌏 How to describe travel experiences
💬 How to share what we saw, did and felt
💡 Practical tips for travelling with confidence

The best part? Everyone had the chance to talk about their own travel experiences, memories and feelings — and we could see their confidence growing with every conversation! ❤️

It was wonderful to hear our learners speaking more confidently, naturally and fluently in English.

English is not just about learning words — it’s about being able to share your story. ✨

This week, our English Corner learners took their English skills to the next level with a fun and practical lesson on Western dining manners 🍽️！

From learning useful restaurant vocabulary to practising how to make a reservation, order food, and interact with restaurant staff, everyone had plenty of opportunities to speak and practise.

We also learned about:
🍴 How to set and use different types of cutlery
🥄 Which fork, knife and spoon to use
🍽️ Basic Western dining manners
🗣️ Useful English phrases for dining out

It was wonderful to see everyone becoming more confident using English in everyday situations. A big thank you to our teacher and everyone who joined us this week!

SOPMCA English Corner – Knowing What to Do When You Need Medical Help 🩺

This week at SOPMCA English Corner, we learned practical English for accessing healthcare in Australia.

Participants learned how to:
🩺 Make an appointment with a GP
🚑 Call an ambulance and explain an emergency
💬 Describe common symptoms and how you’re feeling
🏥 Understand when to visit an Urgent Care Clinic(UCC)
💳 Learn about Medicare and how it can help with healthcare costs

These are everyday English skills that can make a big difference when we or our family members need medical help.

🎉 Our SOPMCA English Corner – Term 3 kicked off successfully this week!

This session focused on the upcoming Australian Census. Participants learned:
✅ What the Census is
✅ Who needs to complete it
✅ How to access and complete the Census form
✅ What types of questions are included

We also practised useful everyday English for filling out forms and answering common personal information questions, helping everyone build confidence in real-life situations.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us. We look forward to seeing you again next week for another fun and practical English session!

🎬 SOPMCA Private Movie Screening – A day to Remember!

Last Saturday, we wrapped up our exclusive community film screening, and what an incredible time it was!

We were honoured to welcome our distinguished guests – Federal MP Sally Sitou MP, State MPDonna Davis MP, local Councillor Michael Ng, and our dedicated MCLO from Auburn Police. Your presence and ongoing commitment to supporting multicultural community initiatives mean the world to us. Thank you for taking the time to engage with our members and for recognising the importance of inclusive, connected neighbourhoods.

📚 Dragon Boats, Dumplings & Cultural Traditions 🐉🛶

What a wonderful way to wrap up this term’s English Corner!

With the Dragon Boat Festival just around the corner, our participants enjoyed a special cultural learning session. We were delighted to welcome a professional dragon boat paddler Pete, who introduced us to the exciting sport of dragon boat racing and shared insights into teamwork, technique, and the spirit behind this traditional activity.

We also explored the stories, legends, and customs associated with the Dragon Boat Festival, learning about the origins of this important cultural celebration and how it continues to be observed today.

The highlight of the day was getting hands-on and learning how to make traditional rice dumplings (zongzi)! Everyone had a great time trying their skills and sharing plenty of laughter along the way.

Thank you to all our participants, volunteers, and guest presenter for making this semester so enjoyable and memorable.
