Kristy has been a carer in Weipa for near on 16 years and still loves everyinute of it. We have 7 other carers Shanna, Tracey, Elissa, Deidre, Megan, Tyler and Ejsha We mostly receive birds, wallabies an occasionally get some different critters.

🦜 FREE BIRD HANDLING COURSE – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC! 🦜

Weipa Wildlife Care Inc. is excited to offer this FREE Bird Handling Course to members of our community on Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th August 2026.

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the safe handling and care of our native birds, with practical information and skills for anyone interested in wildlife.

Found injured wildlife after Cyclone Narelle?

After severe weather, many animals are displaced, injured, or separated from their parents.

1. Ensure your safety first
Check for hazards like fallen branches, debris, fallen power lines, or unstable ground. Keep a safe distance if needed as certain animals may be frightened or defensive.

2. Look for a nest or parent first
Baby birds are not always abandoned. Check to see if a nest or parents are visible first.

3. Contain if at risk and safe to do so
If the animal is injured or in immediate danger:
• Place in a box with air holes
• Line with a towel or cloth
• Keep it quiet, dark, and warm

4. If injured, please take directly to a vet
Call ahead if possible: (07) 4069 7460

Common mistakes to avoid
• Feeding bread or incorrect food
• Giving baby birds water (risk of choking)
• Handling too much (causes stress)
• Keeping wildlife overnight
• Letting pets or children handle them
