🚙 Bush Ready, Country Safe 🌿

Travelling on Country often means navigating remote tracks, soft sand, creek crossings and changing conditions. Being prepared before you leave can help keep everyone safe and prevent a small problem from becoming a major one.

On ranger trips, we make sure our vehicles are equipped with essential recovery and safety gear, including recovery tracks, air compressors, spare tyres, first aid kits, communication equipment and plenty of water.

Tyre pressures are one of the simplest but most important things to manage when driving on soft sand. Lowering tyre pressures can improve traction and help prevent vehicles from becoming bogged, while an air compressor allows tyres to be reinflated before returning to harder roads.

Even with experience and preparation, vehicles can still get stuck. Having the right recovery equipment and knowing how to use it safely helps get everyone moving again while reducing damage to vehicles and Country.

Take the right gear, travel safely, and always respect Country. 🚙🌿

Travelling between waterholes and Yinta’s along the Coongan River gave the team a chance to spend more time on Country, visit important places, and continue conversations with community members about the future of the project.

Along the way we came across some unexpected travellers of our own — a small mob of camels making their way through the landscape. 🐪

Every trip on Country is different, and there’s always something new to see around the next bend.

Following the Coongan 🌊

The Nyamal Rangers recently travelled to Marble Bar to spend time with local Nyamal community members and visit important Yinta (waterholes) along the Coongan River.

These places hold cultural, environmental and historical significance, and getting out on Country together provides an opportunity to share knowledge, listen to stories, and learn more about the places that have supported Nyamal people for generations.

Trips like these help build a stronger understanding of the health of our waterways while ensuring cultural knowledge continues to be passed on to future generations. Spending time at these important places also helps guide future ranger activities and strengthens our connection to Country.

This trip forms part of the Mangkurla Parkarra Mangkurla (Women Alongside Women) project, supporting opportunities for Nyamal women to connect with Country, share knowledge and strengthen culture for future generations.

Not every creature caught on our camera traps is a kangaroo or quoll… Sometimes it’s these little night-time speed demons racing around in the dark! Luckily for us, they’re more cute than scary.

After setting up camera traps on a previous trip, the Rangers returned to collect the footage—and it looks like these kangaroos were just as curious about the cameras as we were about them.

Camera traps help us monitor wildlife across Nyamal Country, giving us a better understanding of what species are using different areas and how they move through the landscape.

Sometimes they even stop by for a close-up!
