Ageing Australia has warned that a critical opportunity to address hospital delays for older Australians has been missed.

The new National Health Reform Agreement did not include a previously proposed $2 billion investment to support timely transitions from hospital into aged care, despite mounting pressure on both systems.

As Ageing Australia CEO Tom Symondson said, “This was a rare opportunity for state and federal governments to work together to improve outcomes for the thousands of older Australians stuck in hospital for extended periods, but that opportunity has been missed."

“Australia is currently building a fraction of the beds we need,” says Ageing Australia CEO Tom Symondson

No surprises here!!!

No surprises here!!!

We need 10,00 new aged care beds every year. We provided 800 last year.

“Recently, the headlines have returned to the same story, time and again: thousands of older Australians stuck in hospital beds who can't get into aged care.

Predictably, the shouting starts - states blame the Commonwealth, the Commonwealth points back to the states. And somewhere in the middle sits the aged care sector, cast as either callously unwilling or unable to help.

It’s a neat political soundbite. But it’s misleading. Nobody can deny that many older people who should move from hospital to aged care can’t, due to growing bed shortages, and we’re working every day to fix that. But the truth is more complicated than any press release might suggest…”
– Tom Symondson, Chief Executive Officer, Ageing Australia
